This Church Ain’t Taco Bell - Why College Kids Leave Church

February 1, 2019

We try to figure out why college-aged kids are leaving church by the droves - 70% of them. And most of them leave church “unintentionally.” That means most kids are attending church unintentionally! Families attend church like they drop in on Taco Bell. However, what they fail to understand is the church is not Taco Bell. The Church is not an event. It is the body of the living Christ. And to join the body of Christ is an all-or-nothing proposition.

Why is the abortion rate for Catholics higher than the rest of the country, while the Protestant rates are lower? A Catholic Governor signs the worst abortion law in the nation, but why won’t the Catholics excommunicate him? Where is the courage of Ambrose who stood down Emperor Theodosius after his bloody purge at Thessalonica? We draw in some important history to remind our listeners that there has been some fear of God among Christian leaders in past centuries.

Modern society has lost its humanity and its identity. The insanity is thorough-going partially because the medium is the message. Gender confusion is a symptom of more fundamental brokenness, as Dr. Alistair Roberts shares on this program. How will the church restore humanity and community in this dystopian age?

The “Brave New World” continues living out the horror of godless science, with surrogacy on the rise. The manufacture of orphans, the depersonalization of the fetus, the hiring of wombs, the selling of children, the encouragement of child drag queens, all add up to the victimization of children. Christians should at the very least wake up to the abominations practiced by the world, realize the severe violations of God’s law going on with IVF and Surrogacy, and avoid participation in godless science.

Vice President Mike Pence defends a small Christian school in Virginia, after it receives searing attacks for refusing to embrace the homosexual vision for the world. Sadly, Christian education is on the decline in America. . .making up smaller and smaller segments of American K-12 education. Genuine Christians however will demand Christian education for their children in the vein of Deuteronomy 6. Christian education is not just the hope for the future of America, it is the hope for the continuity of the Christian faith itself for future generations. What is a Christian Education and how would it differ from government-funded schools?

Teen popular culture now has shifted into almost 100% Satanism, homosexuality, and suicide. While Christian parents want to protect their children from these ungodly influences, they can’t protect their kids from their own hearts. What do you tell a parent whose teen kids are in rebellion after they’ve done “all the right things?”

We arrive on Day 34 in the longest government shutdown in history. This brings up a discussion on the purpose of government. Is government intended to regulate every part of life? Does government fix problems? What is the role for government as assigned by God? The most important lesson for all of us is that government doesn’t change the world. Jesus changes the world. Jesus Christ has come to save us from our problems. That’s not the government’s job.

It’s a low time in American Christianity, but are we doing better than we were in the 1970s? Many are seeking revival but what does that mean? Rearranging the furniture, trying a whole new set of programs, introducing a new worship band, or reverting to house churching. . .none of that will work, without the power of God opening the hearts of the people and bringing about real conversions. We interview two of the leading pastors in America — one Presbyterian and the other Baptist. We ask a simple question, “How does the church reform in the 21st century?”

College campuses and most of culture is now swimming in victimhood, and the snowflakes are screaming “micro-aggression,” especially if any dare to question victim culture. This creates much dissension and disunity, a destabilization of human society. We contrast victim culture against honor culture, dignity culture, and. . . humble culture. Modern culture is soaking in pride, self-esteem, and zero fear of God. The result of course, is catastrophic. David said, “Against thee oh God, and thee only I have sinned. . .” Of course, David sinned against Bathsheba. But far more important than this. . . David sinned against God. This changes the whole perspective for all of us, when we bring God into center.

Video games sales have reached $85 billion, and that’s 4X the total toy market. Does real joy entail entertaining ourselves to death? Real rejoicing happens in community and in the face of God. We summarize true joy as occurring as we rejoice in the victory, in hope, and in relationship with God.

The liberal news media points to the collapse of Bill Gothard, the firing of Paige Patterson, and the shrinkage of Bob Jones University as an indication that authoritarianism and fundamentalism is about gone in America. But what is this authoritarianism and fundamentalism? There was a cheap knock-off form of fundamentalism that is collapsing, but is there something that still remains. Here is a discussion on the breakdown of a conservative strain of Christianity that wasn’t authentic enough.
