The Decade in Review - Judgment Began in the Household of God

January 1, 2020

It was the decade of Franklin Graham, Ken Ham, John MacArthur, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Carrie Underwood, Mylie Cyrus, Josh Harris, Hillsong, Taylor Swift, Chick-fil-A, Lauren Daigle, Fantasy, Superheroes, Scandals, Catharsis, Nero, Greta, Obama and Trump, and John Maynard Keynes. It was an extraordinary decade in the history of mankind. And, the verse that exactly fit. . . "For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?" We cover this fast-moving, world-transitioning decade in fifteen minutes.

Can a hardcore gamer survive a real-world crisis? How can the gamer be saved and come back into contact with the true reality of God’s world? That’s the question that Phillip Telfer grapples with in his new novel “Why Save Alexander.” This makes for an interesting discussion on Generations.

Pride comes before destruction and haughty spirit before a fall. It was the year of Christian apostasy, surprising conversions, evangelicalism cracking and dividing, the death of manhood, despair deaths, Pride-lust Marches, the failure of the Democrat establishment, and a rising persecution against Christian schooling, Christian discipleship, and homeschooling around the world. This is our annual year in review — interesting insight upon the world from 40,000 feet in altitude.

The left is more interested in imposing salvation by the state with ineffectual crusades and do-gooder agendas. Their imposed salvations become more tyranny, more taxation, and more frustration and futility for all. They miscalculate badly concerning the nature of man and the purpose of civil government. We point to the guy who was sentenced 15 years for blaspheming the god of homosexuality, and burning an $8.00 flag. Of course, it’s taxpayers who will carry the bill of $450,000 for room and board for this guy. The taxpayers have pretty much earned it. They elect their leaders. But, the root of it all — a really bad worldview.

Twenty years ago, Christianity Today Magazine had claimed that President Clinton was “morally unable” to lead the nation. Now, the same magazine claims consistency in recommending the removal of President Trump on moral grounds. Are 82% of evangelicals being hypocritical with their approval of Donald Trump over Bill Clinton? Evangelicalism is splitting down the center, and this provides an interesting manifestation of the divide. We carefully analyze the grounds of Christianity Today’s argument on this edition of the program. In the scheme of things, is there all that much difference between President Trump and President Clinton? More fundamentally — is there much of a commitment to God’s law on personal and institutional levels among evangelicals? Where will true reformation come to a nation? Will it happen in Washington DC, or in the grass roots of a nation?

While there has been some interest in the German Reformation of 1517, there has not been much said of the Swiss Reformation, which got its start in 1519. It was the Swiss Reformation that had the most influence on France, Scotland, England, and America — more so than the German. One simple practice marked this great reformation. Could something similar happen in churches today?

The first indications of decentralization of power back to the states have come through the US Supreme Court. Kevin Swanson provides insight into what the end of empires have looked like throughout history, all of which provides hope for freedom and Christian influence once more.

It’s the richest nation in the world, but with the most broken-down families in the world. America is falling down. When man’s hopes are put in man, inevitably he will wind up over the line of despair. Life expectancy has dropped off since 2011, all attributed to what is known as “despair deaths.” We point to Psalms 42, 77, and 143 as the great need for the day.

Hallmark Channel (and Chick Fil-A) have managed to make everybody mad, when pulled in to the homosexual morass. Why must they give in to the homosexual community, which makes up only 2% of the population vs. the 50% of heartland America that is watching their channel? But, then we turn to the more basic question. Shall we watch Hallmark movies at all? What’s the worldview behind the “redemption by being kind to one another” story? We also caution about romantic lust. The only kind of lust is not homosexual lust. What about the lust or discontentment that arises while binging on Hallmark Romance Movies?

Seismic political shifts are happening in the two most powerful nations in the world (in earlier centuries). The UK and the US are seeing the biggest political moves of the 21st century — indicating shifts towards nationalism or just de-centrism. The media is contributing to the serious cracking up of national unity, but what is it that is bringing about the loss of national unity? What is the exact problem with the President that creates such polarization and hatred? What do people hate about President Donald Trump? And Who is breaking up the United States?

What would it look like if America had a revival of reformational proportions? The English reformation shook the world, and produced a special piety — a down-to-earth, all-of-life commitment to Christ. Lives were transformed and so were entire institutions. Could this happen again? Dr. Joel Beeke shares on his expertise with this most amazing reformation of Christian life. What would it look like today? Would the Puritans watch movies, smoke big cigars, and theologize all day long? Or, would they mortify sin, cultivate godly marriages, love God, fear God, and transform institutions to glory of God?
