Word #5—Church

14I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of truth. 16Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. —1 Timothy 3:14-16

Today’s word is church. I believe the church of Jesus Christ is without a doubt the most neglected resource, the most overlooked opportunity, in seeing your family transformed into all God wants it to be.

Let me draw special attention to part of today’s Scripture passage: “I am writing these things to you so… you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.”

Notice first of all that the church is the pillar of truth. The pillar is what holds up the roof. Many people feel like their family is falling in on top of them. It doesn’t need to be that way. Notice the church is also the buttress, or foundation of the truth, the strength and support you need to live the truth consistently in your family.

When you put those two things together, God is saying the church is a resource for you to use and a pillar to support you. There is an incredible resource in this thing called the church of Jesus Christ to strengthen your marriage, to equip your family, to help you be all God wants you to be. But tragically, the average family is getting such a pitiful, minimal return on their investment compared to the wealth and the protection and the covering that is available in the church of Jesus Christ.

Now notice the phrase, the household of God, which is the church of the living God. The fact is, the average person doesn’t know how to conduct themselves in the church of Christ. People don’t really know how to mine for themselves and for their family the benefits available in faithful, meaningful connectedness to the local church.

For example, when the authority structure in the home fails, the church is there to back up the authority structure in the home. The church backstops the family, but only if the family is connected. How does this happen? Participate in worshiping Christ and let your children witness that reality. Participate in authentic relationships with others in church and let your kids experience life in the body. The church is a key resource in family building and maintenance.—James MacDonald

·         How is my family connected with my church?

·         What would it take to cement that connection even more?

Prayer - Father, I admit it’s easy to dismiss the church as simply another part of the regular schedule we have to keep, rather than seeing it as the lifeline you designed it to be in our lives. Father, help me to make it the right kind of priority and make me an example to my children. Lead me to initiate and anticipate gathering with other believers to worship You in spirit and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen
