Be on Guard Against Greed

January 5, 2022

As we continue our “In Step” series through the book of Luke, Pastor J.D. preaches about a sickness that most of us have, but few of us realize—the sickness of greed. Part of what makes greed so deadly is our inherent blindness to it. Jesus simply assumes that greed is a problem for all of us! But he also offers us a radical, gospel-shaped antidote.

What one thing would make your life not worth living if you didn’t have it? If your answer to that question is anything but Jesus, then your foundation will inevitably crumble. Pastor J.D. shows us how we can make sure the foundation of our life is secure as we continue our new series in the book of Luke called “In Step.”

As we begin our “In Step” series through the book of Luke, Pastor J.D. dives into one of Jesus’ most recognized parables. It’s a story about two men who built identical houses—with tragically different results. The only difference? Their foundation. In these times of uncertainty, as our very lives seem shaken, it’s a perfect time to make sure our lives are built on a foundation that will endure.

There are some passages in the Bible I’m just not sure what to do with. Well, maybe more than “some”. The Psalms of help and protection especially fall in that category of Scripture I’m not sure if I’m really using correctly. It seems like we gravitate toward them, but I have a hard time applying them to my life.

I’ve started to rely more and more on the different GPS apps on my phone - not because I don’t know my way around, but because they get real-time traffic information and can correct my course. It’s more of a guide than just a map. Today, Pastor J.D. lovingly shows us that what we need is a relationship with a constant guide who, at every point, can provide the next piece. Let’s join in as he concludes his message from Psalm 25.

No matter how strong our faith is, we all have moments when we come to the end of ourselves. The problem is, if we’re honest, we aren’t sure if God can meet us in that place. But Pastor J.D. explains that if we offer our desperation to God in prayer, we will find him eager to listen, eager to forgive, eager to heal, eager to step in and help.

Did you know that Esther is one of only two books in the Bible named for a woman? It’s been a pretty controversial book. But not because it is named for a woman, but because God’s name is not mentioned— not even one time—in the whole book! Thankfully, however, God has kept it in the Bible for us—because it really has something important to teach us. Today Pastor J.D. will wrap up a quick trip through Esther and we'll hear the timeless challenge that it is always the right call to risk it all for the sake of Jesus. Jump right into Chapter 4 with us.

Pastor J.D. opens up Esther, a book that surprisingly lacks the name of God, yet is mysteriously full of God at work. We’re going to see that God has sovereignly arranged our circumstances, just like Esther's, to be strategically involved in his mission. Grab your Bible, and take some notes as we dive in.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and peace. But the reality is for most of us, December is just as hard as the rest of the year, if not more! So, does Christmas actually change anything? That’s our subject as Pastor J.D. wraps up a short series called, God With Us.

As Christians, we tend to use the term “blessed” pretty loosely. When something good happens, we say we’re blessed. Or when we start on a new venture, we pray for God’s blessings. But what do we actually mean? Is our understanding of that word actually biblical? Those are the question we’re tackling as Pastor J.D. continues his short series called, God With Us. We’re looking at how Mary talked about blessing when she was pregnant with Jesus in Luke chapter 1.

Imagine this: It’s the First Century A.D. You’re an unmarried teenage girl. And suddenly, you learn that you’ve got a baby on the way. In that culture, an unwed mother would be a huge scandal. Your reputation would be ruined, and you would probably be a social outcast for the rest of your life. That was the situation Mary faced when the angel told her she would give birth to the Messiah. And yet, she called herself blessed. Pastor J.D. is reframing our understanding of biblical blessings. It’s part of our series called, God With Us.
