Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? If I really believe that God is real and that He rewards those who seek Him, and that His reward must be far greater than any reward I can get elsewhere, then I will not be tempted to do things to impress other people to get a reward from them. The more we know about God, the more we want to please Him, and the more everything else begins to fall into place.

"Therefore you must be perfect." That's a lot of pressure! We need to hear clearly what Jesus is saying here, and what he's not saying, and then we'll be better equipped to follow his moral advice as well as come to him for the forgiveness we need when we fail.

This series emphasizes that words matter, and we see that in these oaths that Jesus talks about. "Let your yes be yes, and your no be no." Don't varnish it, don't make it sound better than it is; let's be straightforward and clear with our words.

We need to approach this passage with humility so as not to miss something that may be lurking in our lives. This pertinent passsage examines our lives, and we need to come to it with humility, openness, and an acknowledgment that it comes from our loving Lord Jesus.

Worship is very important, but here Jesus is placing a high premium on reconcilliation before worship. It all comes back to the issue of not being individualistic in our idea of God. Our relationships with other people actually matter in our act of worship because we go to church as a community.

We continue looking at our attitude toward church and those in it. How we feel about the people is a reflection of how we feel about God. It is so important that when we love Christ, we love His people.

Righteous anger is an expression of love. Unrighteous anger is not. If there's any doubt as to which you are feeling, it's more likely your anger is unrighteous, especially if you stand to gain by its expression and the other person will lose.

There can be chaos in the state of higher biblical learning today with many opinions and people taking sides. But it is wonderful to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to his teaching, which is very clear in the Sermon on the Mount.

Be encouraged! Don't let anyone tell you that your role as a Christian at home or at work is insignificant. It has global, salt-of-the-earth, light-of-the-world significance! This means that everything we do as a Christian has purpose and a global impact.
