Real Men

September 9, 2010
Wild at Heart or Acting Righteously, Loving Mercy, and Walking Humbly? The television fair for the new season calls for more women action heroes. Why? Recent surveys find that women are sick of wimpy men, and prefer women beating up on the bad guys. With the ongoing disintegration of manliness, Christians have responded with diversionary, confused ideas of biblical manhood. Sensitive New-Age Guys? Wild-Hearted Thrill Seekers? Macho Men? Mr. Moms? Sports Freaks? If there was ever a time to figure out the male identity, it would be now - before our social systems completely unravel.

Scared of Food A recent documentary entitled 'Food Inc.' has been released which seeks to expose the 'corrupt practices' of major food production corporations and to produce paranoia and fear in big city folk who have never considered the fact that for them to be able to eat that bacon double-cheeseburger, a cow did actually have to die and be cut up and pushed through a meat factory. The film is hardly objective with frightening music and gory scenes intended to cause discomfort to the viewer and to instill a romanticism with 18th-century style farming and organic foods. Dave reviews the film on this edition of Generations and provides his perspective on the state of food today discussing both positive and negative aspects of our food supply and what Christians should do with the food they eat.

An Interview with William Federer Barack Obama is America’s first president not to attend the national day of prayer, in contrast to James Madison calling the people to their knees in repentance to God. What has changed? On this program, Dave interviews William Federer, author of Prayers and Presidents, about the national prayers and days of fasting called by the early presidents, and Dave compares that to the faith of our current president.

God’s Law in Culture A town of Hasidic Jews in New York put up a sign asking visitors to dress modestly and speak appropriately. In a similar story in Venice, the mayor puts the kabosh on an immodest billboard only because it did not belong in St. Mark’s Square. Occasionally there are still people who try to follow God’s law at points, but for the wrong reasons. What exactly is the place of God’s law in society? Listen, on this edition of Generations, as Dave interacts with how God’s law and His gospel apply to culture.

The Failure of Polytheism A recent rally held at the National Mall in Washington D.C. by television host and Mormon Glenn Beck aims to "restore honor" to America. Beck and the other speakers call us back to the faith and virtues upon which America was founded. Unfortunately, "the gods" are invoked as the restorative forces in our nation rather than the one true God. The mixture of Muslims, polytheistic Mormons, and evangelical Christians at this rally fail to understand that abandoning the one true God to a pantheon of gods, whether Mormon or other, destroys any basis for virtue and law. The abandonment of the first commandment destroys the foundation for the other nine. To restore honor and virtue in America we must first restore fear and honor of the one true God. Dave provides a needed corrective for the prevailing polytheism of the culture calling us back to the authority of God speaking in His Word, "I am the Lord your God...you shall have no other gods before me." (Ex. 20:2-3).

Building a Family Legacy The foundations of the family in the 21st century have been utterly destroyed and utter social breakdown has been the consequence. As the Psalmist laments "if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Ps. 11:3). Thus it is the duty of Christian parents to rebuild the foundations of the family on the principles of God's Word and create a legacy such as the promise given to Jonadab by the Lord that "Jonadab the son of Rechab shall never lack a man to stand before me." (Jer. 35:19). Dave interviews E. Ray & Gail Moore on their new book discussing this promise and how Christian families can build a similar legacy in their families that will extend through eternity.

The Naivete of Christians With over 10 million copies now in print and over 110 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 'The Shack' is an unparalleled phenomena within American Christianity. Rumors of a movie have been swirling since publication and it seems inevitable that the book will be produced for the cinema. This will only widen the audience of the man-centered message so enthusiastically received by naive Christians. Christians who have no worldview grounding, no theological grounding, and no historical context for their faith are doomed to follow any dictator, cult leader, or weird Pied Piper coming down the pike. The naivete of Christians may be seen in the incredible reception of the 'The Shack.' The author is concerned to address certain 'religious conditioning,' yet Kevin Swanson is concerned with the 'worldview/religious conditioning' of people who write books that favor a man-centered ethic and telos, Marxist egalitarianism (in the abolition of authority in the economic Trinity), and post-modern rule-less relativism.

Flawed gods Modern man enjoys his flawed gods as much as the Romans did in the old empire days. Kevin Swanson compares the spiraling dissolution of modern entertainment with what happened during the old Roman days on this edition of Generations. But what about folks like Tim Tebow and the Duggar family (“19 Kids and Counting”)? How do they fit into this picture?

Relationships vs. Love Relationships for teens have broken down into 3,000 text messages a month. Shallow. Trite. Distant. Meaningless. But what is this word “relationship?” Kevin Swanson points out that this is not a biblical word. The Bible speaks of love. So many people who try to restore relationships in family and church fail because they don’t understand that love is conflict resolution. Love is forgiveness.

Throwing Money at the Problem To celebrate the great recession of the 2000s, Los Angeles builds the most expensive public high school on record! Then, Craig Brandon writes a book on college education in the 2000s, and calls it "The Five-Year Party School." Evidently, Tom Wolfe's 2004 novel "I am Charlotte Simmons" is not fiction. What props up the socialist schools is of course socialist big-government now spending 63.4% of the people's income. Cost of Government day is now August 19th. But would there be any socialist big-government if it weren't for socialist schools, which are running about $600 million now? The collapse of the public schools is inevitable - but what do sane people do about it now?

How to Raise a Daughter to be a Trustee The reason the family is falling apart with each successive generation is that we have inherited the wrong idea of the family. Andrea Schwartz from Chalcedon explains the difference between an atomistic family and a trustee family, encouraging us to restructure our thinking concerning the family. Given this idea of the family, would you raise your sons and daughters to be employees or trustees?
