Government Doesn’t Fix Problems - The Longest Shutdown in History

January 24, 2019

We arrive on Day 34 in the longest government shutdown in history. This brings up a discussion on the purpose of government. Is government intended to regulate every part of life? Does government fix problems? What is the role for government as assigned by God? The most important lesson for all of us is that government doesn’t change the world. Jesus changes the world. Jesus Christ has come to save us from our problems. That’s not the government’s job.

It’s a low time in American Christianity, but are we doing better than we were in the 1970s? Many are seeking revival but what does that mean? Rearranging the furniture, trying a whole new set of programs, introducing a new worship band, or reverting to house churching. . .none of that will work, without the power of God opening the hearts of the people and bringing about real conversions. We interview two of the leading pastors in America — one Presbyterian and the other Baptist. We ask a simple question, “How does the church reform in the 21st century?”

College campuses and most of culture is now swimming in victimhood, and the snowflakes are screaming “micro-aggression,” especially if any dare to question victim culture. This creates much dissension and disunity, a destabilization of human society. We contrast victim culture against honor culture, dignity culture, and. . . humble culture. Modern culture is soaking in pride, self-esteem, and zero fear of God. The result of course, is catastrophic. David said, “Against thee oh God, and thee only I have sinned. . .” Of course, David sinned against Bathsheba. But far more important than this. . . David sinned against God. This changes the whole perspective for all of us, when we bring God into center.

Video games sales have reached $85 billion, and that’s 4X the total toy market. Does real joy entail entertaining ourselves to death? Real rejoicing happens in community and in the face of God. We summarize true joy as occurring as we rejoice in the victory, in hope, and in relationship with God.

The liberal news media points to the collapse of Bill Gothard, the firing of Paige Patterson, and the shrinkage of Bob Jones University as an indication that authoritarianism and fundamentalism is about gone in America. But what is this authoritarianism and fundamentalism? There was a cheap knock-off form of fundamentalism that is collapsing, but is there something that still remains. Here is a discussion on the breakdown of a conservative strain of Christianity that wasn’t authentic enough.

The American Psychological Association has concluded that traditional masculinity is toxic to the nation. Competitiveness, male aggression, achievement, and risk are seen as threatening and toxic to the present social milieu. Do we really like “traditional” masculinity if that means able machismo and a tendency to want to commit sexual sin? What is true biblical masculinity? This is the crying need of the day — godly men, mature men, and men who are ready to lead in the family. We recommend this program for young men especially.

Church attendance in England dropped off to 1.2%. Church attendance in America has been dropping now for ten years. Will the church ever reform in America as long as the pastors tolerate secular, public education? In a secular, post-Christian age, is it possible that we might be on the cusp of another sweeping revival or reformation? This is the burden of pastors like Dr. George Grant and Mark Robinette — here is a crying need for reformation as felt by the leading pastors in America.

Should Christians compost their bodies? Should they cremate their relatives and tattoo their bodies? What would post-Christian Christians do in a post-Christian world? We take up the controversial topic of cremation, starting with what the Bible says about cremation, and defining Christian culture. Christians would live out their worldview of resurrection. If they REALLY believed in the resurrection of the body, what would they do with the body? That’s the $100,000 question of the day.

We review the two developments going on in films and popular culture, focusing on the escapism in sci-fi and fantasy films. The Golden Globes lead the way on mainstreaming Leviticus 18 perversions. We compare the present offerings to AD 78 Pompeii.

The college bubble has burst, or at least it is deflating fast. Enrollment has dropped by 1 million students in six years. . . that’s like 100 major colleges going out of business. The secular college is consuming itself when it denies the beginning of knowledge as the fear of God. It has undermined its own foundations, chopped off its own legs, and burned all of its capital. The college girl to boy ratio is rising 0.5% every 6 years. . .now 56.5% - 43.5%. Men are playing games, the women are working. . . and the kids are being transgendered in the preschools. Colleges represent the wrong educational method, the wrong worldview, the wrong social view, but can Christians still get something out of it?

The younger generation in America today is quite a bit poorer than the young generation was in 1989 . . . by 70%! The fact is that the character of the nation has fallen off the cliff and is careening downwards fast. Put away your red MAGA hat. Forget the wall. America needs to rebuild her foundations. We provide several basic foundational lessons for rebuilding the foundations of character in family and nation. It begins with the Gospel for every generation, because every generation has a problem.
