Burned Out on Church?

November 4, 2010
Loving the Church
The Church is a little passe' with some folks today. The music is boring. The sermons are boring. The people get together, and then they don't get along. After seven church splits and eighteen church squabbles, some just want to get up and leave. Our children and grandchildren are leaving enmasse. But, Scott Brown calls this church a precious body, for which Jesus Christ died. As director of the National Center for Family Integrated Churches, Scott Brown is on a campaign to encourage families to the love of the church. Is it time to rediscover the body-life of the church of Christ?

The Pendulum Swings. . . Sort of. . . The pendulum swings every election. Last election, the pendulum swung to the left about 35 degrees. So we watched with interest as the pendulum to the right, last night. And. . . it was only a ten degree swing. But there is always home, in a tiny minority of men and women who believe in principle. Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner discuss the national election results, early Wednesday morning following Tuesday voting.

The Destruction of American Society 'Transparency International' has for many years published an index of the level of corruption of nations around the globe. The United States has been slipping in the index for many years and in this past year’s assessment it has fallen out of the top twenty to the twenty-second position of least corrupt nations. This is not because other nations have become less corrupt, but because the cancer of corruption is spreading on our shores. In fact corruption is so entrenched and spreading so fast that 'Transparency International' may have been generous in their original assessment. Dave Buehner looks at some examples of corruption and the only solution that has or can ever lead to a free society without corruption.

Mike Farris - Chairman, HSLDA Thus far, the homeschooling movement has sustained two major attacks. Some thought it would produce inferior academic results, calling for onerous government controls. This was answered by a flood of studies on homeschool academic performance. Following this, came the attacks on homeschool socialization. Some thought that homeschooled graduates would be incapable of functioning in society – raising families themselves, getting a good college education, or engaging in the economy. This also was answered by studies on socialization and surveys of homeschool graduates. So the movement grew in numbers and epistemological self-consciousness. Now, homeschooling appears to be changing the social fabric of families everywhere. These kids did not attend socialist schools. They don’t think like socialists. They don’t vote like socialists. They won’t support a socialist nation. Now, that’s a problem, for the socialists. These homeschoolers are guilty as charged. Mike Farris, chairman of HSLDA, sounds an alarm on this edition of Generations concerning this third wave attack on Home Education in America.

More Hate Crimes Laws? Some pollster is telling us that the majority of Americans believe churches contribute to "gay suicides." More fodder for hate crimes legislation, perhaps? Here the Generations boys grapple with how churches contribute to "gay suicides," when many churches still preach against both homosexuality AND suicide. As Kevin Swanson works on his 2010 ballot, he explains why he does not vote for congressmen who vote for hate crimes laws.

Worldviews in Conflict Humanists, Muslims, and Christians will produce different social orders. The decentralized tyrannies produced by polygamy often compete with the more centralized forms we find in an economy that controls 64% of the GNI. But what is an evangelical pastor doing calling for more state control of home education? Kevin Swanson jumps into the war of the worldviews, pointing out that the church has often contributed to the persecution of those seeking freedom from the all-pervasive state.

Avoiding Socialist Medicine “We’re all socialists now!” That’s what Newsweek announced to all of us a year or so ago. But what if we don’t want to be socialists? Can we NOT be socialists? Sadly, it is the poor among us that are lured into dependence on the socialist state. What role does the church have to help these folks get off of the government dole, whether it be food stamps or Medicaid/Medicare? James Lansberry from Samaritan Ministries takes a shot at these questions on this edition of Generations. For those folks who still have an interest in freedom, now is the time to lay out meaningful solutions to the inexorable rise in socialism.

Why the Generational Apostasy? Dr. Al Mohler is fast becoming one of the most important commentators on the state of the faith in the west. While the Christian faith is making inroads elsewhere, the question remains, will Christianity survive in the west? We are experiencing the most severe generational apostasy in history right now. But why are the 20-somethings flaking out? Why do so many leave the faith, or trade their parent's faith for something squishier? So we asked Al these questions. His answers may surprise you.

Engaging 2,000,000 Homeschooled Graduates to the Cause of Liberty Homeschooled graduates are politically active. According to a recent survey of homeschool graduates, they are 14 times more likely to be involved in politics than their counterparts from Public and Private Schools. So what gives? How are these folks motivated to make a difference in society? If only 5% of homeschooled graduates were anything like the Boyer family, America would be transformed in the next generation. That’s the conclusion of Tim Boyer in this exciting discussion on the Boyer brothers’ initiative – “Take Back the Land!”

How about the more relational, loving approach? What is this world coming to, when four and five year old children are institutionalized, away from the nurture of a loving mother? Why is institutionalization so important to families, in a country where 64% of children under 6 are latchkey? The New York Times reports on bullying common in kindergarten - where it used to occur in junior high school. Susan Lemons presents a alternative with her book Homepreschool and Beyond. As a former preschool teacher and homeschooling mom, Susan has been on both sides of this issue. She encourages moms to take advantage of those early years by nurturing interaction, lots of conversation, spiritual nurture, read-aloud books, and a few formal academic activities. Here is a balanced, wonderfully practical program for mothers of preschoolers.

The English Reformation For 1000 years, the English people had no BIble published in their own language. One man gave his life to make it happen - William Tyndale. The power of a book to transform cultures is inestimable. But why do tyrannical powers oppose it? Kevin Swanson and James McDonald discuss the blessing of the English Reformation on 500 years of world history. But what will happen in the next 500 years?
