Is God Ever Disappointed in You?

January 2, 2019

Oro from Toronto called in to our radio program to ask for my thoughts on the following statement made by his friend:

“When we obey God, He is delighted. When we disobey God, He is disappointed.”

Is God disappointed in us when we sin? Does He have expectations that He holds over us?

Oro’s questions brought on a very interesting discussion that I think will be helpful as you consider God’s attitude toward you in good times and in bad.

Jack called in to our radio program to ask about depression and the believer. In response to Jack’s question, I reference Lamentations and Psalms and discuss potential roots of depression. I also discuss that deeper place within us – deeper than our brain or body – from which we can be counseled and comforted by Christ himself. I hope this is a real encouragement to you today if you suffer from bouts of depression. And if you know someone who might benefit from this, consider passing it along to them as well.

Through the new covenant, God has written His desires on our hearts. But what exactly is written within us? Many Christians seem to think that the Old Testament Law is written on our hearts. Jamal from South Florida called in to our radio program to ask what laws are etched on the lining of our new hearts. In this short radio clip, I address Jamal’s question and clarify what it means to have a new covenant heart with God’s desires stamped on it.

Van from Michigan attended prosperity-driven churches for quite a while. In those churches, he was taught a mandatory tithe and was told that financial planning is actually a lack of faith in God! In this short video clip, I discuss Van’s concerns about making decisions on church giving and financial planning.

Jack called in to our radio program to ask about the parable of “The Pearl of Great Price” and what it’s really all about. In this short radio clip, I talk about the parable and what it can mean to us as new covenant believers with Christ living in us.

Mary from Alabama called in to our radio program to ask about sickness and disease. Is God the initiator of these things or does He simply allow them? If God is in control, how are we to understand the bad things that happen to us? Is God ever the author of them? In this short video clip, I address Mary’s questions. I hope this is an encouragement to you today as you think about the character of God and how He treats you.

Loretta called in to our radio program from Virginia to ask: What is our purpose here on Earth? Why are we here? “To serve the Lord!” someone shouts. Well, maybe that’s what we end up doing to some degree. But Acts 17 tells us that God is not served by human hands as if He needs anything from us. Our God doesn’t need us to serve Him! So, what was God’s real purpose in creating us? In this short video clip, I share what I believe is the biggest and most beautiful reason that God made us.

“But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (1 Timothy 5:8) Ryan from Lansing, Michigan called in to ask about this challenging passage. What does it mean here to have “denied the faith”? Is this about loss of salvation? And how can anyone be “worse than an unbeliever”? In this short video clip, I address Ryan’s question and present the simple and liberating truth about first Timothy 5:8.

Recently, a man killed eleven Jewish people at a Pittsburgh synagogue. A suspect has now been charged in a 44-count indictment. Is it impossible for a man like this to believe the Gospel and be saved? At times like this, we may find ourselves wondering: How big is God’s invitation to grace? Can anyone be forgiven? Mary from Washington D.C. called in to our radio program to ask this important question. In this short video, I address Mary’s question and discuss the true extent of God’s grace.

There are half a dozen passages that some utilize to claim that the whole world is fully reconciled, forgiven, or even saved. Jeff called in to our radio program to ask about these passages. In this short video clip, I share my thoughts on the world passages and what they really mean in context. I hope this is clarifying as you think about what the world has in Adam and what we have in Christ.

Gary is a newer believer who called in to our radio program from New York. Gary recently found himself at a party where some unbelieving friends were asking, “Are there any real benefits to being a Christian right here and now, or is it just about enjoying heaven after death?” Gary and his Christian friends didn’t know how to respond to the unbelievers’ question at the time. So, is being a Christian only about life after death or are there real, tangible benefits to everyday life right now? In this short radio clip, I share my thoughts on this important question. I discuss why the presence and comfort and counsel of Christ in you makes the “wow” right now!
