True Grit and Captain America - Summer Movie Reviews

August 8, 2011
What can we say about a hanging scene that respects biblical law and communicates the fear of God? So what's so bad about Captain America smacking the living daylights out of the Nazi's? Is it fair to commend a scene from a Hollywood movie that actually cracks the door for a biblical metaphysic? Kevin Swanson (with a little help from Steve Vaughan), reviews the Coen brothers' remake of True Grit, Captain America, and the Pirates of the Caribean on this edition of Generations.

The use of the Day-After pill has increased 4 fold in just the last few years. An estimated 7.6 million American women use the pill, which could add another three to four million to the annual abortion tally in this country. Are we doing all that much better than Vietnam, Cuba, and Russia? Doubtful, says Kevin Swanson on this edition of Generations. To make matters worse the Federal HHS is requiring an inclusion of the Day-After Pill in the Federal Healthcare Insurance requirements. We also discuss the role of the civil magistrate and the church in controlling the use of medication for the purpose of murdering a child. How many American Christian women have wombs filled with dead bodies of babies whose implantation on the uterine wall was impeded by the progestin?

Kevin Swanson interviews Representative David Simpson on the No-Groping Bill that almost made it through the Texas Legislature in June. Occasionally, a measure for freedom gains a little ground, and tyranny is set back on its haunches. It is reassuring to know that there are liberty-loving Americans in office who still have the courage to fight for a little freedom here and there! Rep. Simpson explains why the highest offices in Texas blinked when push came to shove in a confrontation with the feds.

A family that stays together... STAYS TOGETHER. One way to stop fragmenting the family is to stop fragmenting the family. It's sort of a no-brainer. But Steve Demme, (founder of the Math-U-See program), makes the point in a light-hearted, serious sort of way on this edition of Generations. Steve tells Kevin that Seminary didn't teach him all that much about family life, but he learned a few lessons along the way (after 32 years of real life experience). The interview also includes some helpful discussions on family worship.

About 150 human animal embryos are now in existence in UK laboratories, and have been for about 3 years. Kevin Swanson takes an old 3000 year old book and tries to apply its principles to a Brave New World that is careening towards economic, social, and scientific disintegration (in more ways than one). He also reports on his first ever visit to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

The numbers are out. The Kill Ratio on children with Down Syndrome England is 71%. These are the first (fairly accurate) numbers we have seen thus far from any developed nations on special needs abortions. What the modern world has lost is a sense of true value. They are lost in their materialist nothingness. So Kevin Swanson interviews Peter Bringe on the joys of living with the Down Syndrome child. Then we revisit an interview with Tom Bushnell from Christian Homes and Special Kids.

The suspect in the Norwegian massacre in Oslo claims to be a "Christian," but what does this mean? How does this form of revolution differ from that of a Stalin or Mao, for example? Important to the discussion is a crucial article on the man's relationship with his own father (reported by the New York Times). Kevin Swanson points out the source of these dangerous revolutionaries (as referred to in Proverbs 30). Here is a very important discussion that will help you understand the actions of violent revolutionaries whether they be Marxist, anarchical, or Muslim.

A Business Insider story explains why Mormons so often excelled in business and politics. But what are evangelical Christians doing with THEIR young men? Is college enough? Will they mature spiritually, relationally, and economically, without significant work in mentorship, discipleship, and character development? Kevin Swanson presents a vision for mentoring young men, and interview Carl Bobb in his work with young men in Colorado. Also, we include a terrific interview with Ron Ochs, a business owner in Klamath Falls, Oregon, who has 9 years of experience in mentorship.

There is hardly a more dramatic and more dangerous story to be found in the history of the church as the life of John Knox. Author Douglas Bond has made it his task to chronicle the stories of the great and courageous men who opposed tyranny against tremendous odds during the reformation period. His latest book tells the story of John Knox, the lightning rod of the Scottish reformation. In the midst of unbelievable tyranny, evil machinations, and social chaos, this preacher took on the Scottish nation with a no-holds-barred message of truth. This thrilling interview with Douglas Bond will inspire and encourage, as we face a future that may be filled with like dangers. . . and possibilities!

Kevin Swanson addresses Tim Challies’ posting on the recent documentary, “Divided.” Is this really a “destructive message wrapped in a poorly-made documentary?” Do the traditions of men EVER displaced God’s laws in the mind of any Christian in America or Canada? Kevin also explains the problem of “aggregate applications,” in ethical and socio-economic discussions (such as that which Jesus engaged in Matthew 15).

Kevin Swanson revisits the problem of government tyranny, this time on home economies. A family is fined $90,000 for raising 200 rabbits in Missouri. Another woman faces 93 days in jail for cultivating a garden in her yard. Should Christians participate in bureaucracies like the FDA or the BATF, that would fine or imprison the innocent citizenry when they have done nothing to harm the person or property of someone else? Kevin points out that controls of families and family economies could be worse here than in communist Vietnam!
