Building Community for People Alone in the City - When Your Heart Desire is a Relational Church

September 9, 2011
How in the world can people be together AND very alone? We live in a lonely age, a very lonely age. But what does this mean for the church? Shall we build a Mega church? Will the slotted small-groups that last for 6 months help us here? What about the $200 per hour "biblical counselors?" You can find groups who pretend to hold on to the same set of 197 propositions. You can find programs and slots, transience and unresolved conflicts, everywhere. But what if you are wanting to see a cross-generational church, where grandparents worship in the same church with their great grant children? In an age where relationships are dying a horrible death, there are some who are coming together who are committed to this vision! It may be restorative to the vision of church in the 21st century! The death of truth with the modern church always parallels the death of relationships. Pastor Steve Walker speaks to his doctoral dissertation on the topic of authentic community, on this edition of Generations.

Fathers are called out in scripture to teach their children the word of God, yet few fathers actually bother to raise up and take the first step. Dr. Robert Otto discusses His book “Rise Up” on how fathers can take the first step and offers help on those difficult areas of the Bible. A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, that first step is what this edition of Generations is all about.

Is there any simple answer to this question? Over the last 30 years, we have seen a total revolution of the music in the Church, representing a radical cultural change more significant than anything seen in at least 500 years! Is this a good thing or bad thing? Now, there is an important question – a one billion dollar question. Does this radical change in culture and music indicate a wonderful reformation and revival in the church, among our teens, or is it just more of the breakdown of the institution of the family, generational continuity, and culture. Is it a breakdown of the faith? Dr. T. David Gordon, professor of Religion and Greek at Grove City College addresses these questions with a thoughtful new book, “Why Johnny Can't Sing Hymns,” and he interacts with host Kevin Swanson on this edition of Generations.

The gendarmes are shutting down lemonade stands all over the country, in constant assaults on child entrepreneurs and family businesses. A $750 million government grant is paying for rapists and molesters to babysit children in Illinois, so mothers can work outside of the home. Are our governments doing more evil than good now? Now is the time to return to biblical principle in economics and government.

A new million-dollar study finds that the average student graduating from Christian school will not raise their children any different from the culture around them. Moreover, the Nehemiah Institute continues monitoring children from Christian homes attending public school and Christian schools and finds their worldview slipping into the category of "Secular Humanist" with each successive year (since 1988 when the organization started testing). Then, a new book encourages Christian parents to send their children to public schools, and be done with it. So what's the moral of the story? The Christian faith is dying, and the Christian worldview is fading with each additional generation. It's a dog-eat-dog battle of worldviews, and the minds and the souls of our children are at stake. When will Christian parents get serious about the form and content of the education they give their children?

The 13-year-old suspect in the Burlington, Colorado murder case faces no more than 7-years prison time, if he is proven guilty of the crime. Kevin Swanson addresses the question of the death penalty for minors (and the death penalty in general) on this edition of Generations.

September 20th is the big day. The Don't Ask Don't Tell Repeal is on its way. The prospects for chaplains who are retaining the bare essentials of the Christian faith may be turning tenuous. Kevin Swanson here interviews Brigadier General and retired Chaplain Douglas Lee (Director of the Presbyterian and Reformed Joint Commission of Chaplains and Military Personnel), on chaplaincy in an increasingly homo-sexualized military. Is this a watershed issue for the military and for the Christian faith as well? Chaplain Lee sees it this way, and encourages steadfast faith in the face of increasing resistance.

Young men all over the world are, more than ever before, struggling with focus, reliability, motivation, and diligence. What are fundamental issues here and how do we address them? Entrepreneur, mentor, and father, Dave Tucker explains how a young man merges into maturity with his own piece of the macro-economy. With the economic system lagging, and with 75% of 2011 college still unemployed, there has never been a better time for this bootstrap message for young men.

For those who hope to re-establish the faith in the western world (and anywhere else the Christian gospel has penetrated), one basic practice is essential. It was the warp and the woof of the faith during the first two centuries of the history of this Christian country. And it is coming back, like a tidal wave, in many places around the country. It is the simple, non-assuming, daily practice of "family worship." Kevin Swanson interviews Dr. Don Whitney from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, on his recent book addressing this incredibly important element of daily spirituality. Also, we highlight a groundbreaking new video called "Gather the Family!" on this edition of Generations.

Kevin Swanson interacts with the rosy outlook of Christian sociologists like Bradley Wright, who is not really all that bothered with the divorce rates, the shack-up rates, the fornication rates, the massive increase in the size of government (thanks to modern "democracies"), etc. Is there a problem with our socio-economic systems? Some tell us to relax, take a pill, and everything will be better in the morning. But the break down the family and the break down of our debt-driven economic systems over the last 90-100 years may yield worse results than people think. Is this a time to elect moderates, or should we get back to electing men who have a strong record of standing for principle? This brings up a discussion on Ron Paul. How might a Christian whose ethics are based in biblical law look at a candidate like Ron Paul?

One way for young men to attain the character needed to survive in the free market place is to go to college and get that 4-year degree. Under the present market conditions, employers hardly trust the college degree, and they are not hiring as they did in the past. Here Kevin Swanson urges families out of the box into mentorships and family economies. Also, we touch on the issue of marriage licenses. Are they biblical?
