Joseph and Mary: Rich or Poor?

Matthew 2:13 says, “An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there … until I tell you.” Merry Christmas! We at MoneyWise hope the day is truly blessed for you and your family. Today, host Rob West and Steve Moore will take a look at Jesus’ family through a financial lens.

·      How could Joseph and Mary, a young couple just starting out in life, pay for their escape to Egypt?

·      Matthew says nothing about the trip, and the account in Luke makes no mention of Mary riding an animal, so many of the ideas people have aren’t actually backed up by the text.

·      There’s no evidence indicating that Joseph and Mary were wealthy, but what about evidence that they were poor?

·      Luke 2, verses 22 and 24 say, “They brought Him (Jesus) up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord … and to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, ‘A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.’” This tells us that Joseph and Mary had little money, because turtledoves and pigeons were an offering of the poor.

·      The magi found Joseph, Mary, and Jesus in Bethlehem where the magi presented them with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Some people believe that these gifts must’ve been of great value, making them able to support themselves on the way to and in Egypt.

Here are a couple of questions we answered from our callers on today’s program:

·      I donated stocks to my church. For tax recording purposes, what are the values of those stocks?

·      I have an annuity through a union that I am no longer part of. I was just wondering if it would be wise for me to roll that money into my existing 401(k)?
