Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? What is it you're using to numb the pain and lack of hope that you feel? Is it alcohol, a drug, or just entertainment—watching movie after movie that make you forget your sense of meaninglessness? We all have our down moments and times when we feel less spiritually alive. In these situations, we turn to other things to satisfy our thirsts, our spiritual desires, and our emotional needs. We don't go to Jesus. We say we believe that He is the ultimate satisfaction; we need to practice that.

The only way to not be frightened about our circumstances or death or disease is to develop a different kind of fear—the fear of the loving, gracious, good, awesome God.

Perhaps you are disappointed with your life and with your God. You have asked Him for so many things and tried to do what is right, but you do not think your life measures up the way you think it should. But we need to get beyond looking at what we don't have and realize what we do have—Jesus!

When we hear the word Pharisee, we tend to think of the caricature of the "bad guys" of the Bible. We can't imagine that anyone would be pharisaic anymore. But in some ways all we need to do is look in the mirror. We all have a tendency to think our way is the right way.

The author of Ecclesiastes is the most successful man imaginable. He has everything we could ever want and then some; he is living the dream. And yet, he says, without God, it's a nightmare.

Fake news has become a regular part of our current lives. This passage deals with credibility and points us to what Francis Schaeffer called "true truth." In Jesus' name and in His light, we can discern the difference between real and fake, truth and lies.
