Is the Family Farm Viable in the 21st Century?

December 17, 2010

How Families Make it Work

Here are two wonderful stories of families whose hearts turned towards re-establishing the family unit in the 21st century – after 8 generations of an industrial revolution that undermined the integrity of the household.   Some families find ways to re-integrate the family in technical businesses.  Some find creative ways to make it work in agriculture.   Michael Pope was a father of nine children with a vision for re-connecting with his family.  So he came home and built a farm from the ground up.

Three years ago, the Alexander family found a creative way to pull together to make it work with a family farm, without any debt!  Joy Alexander shares a story of faith, family relationships, and freedom, on this edition of Generations.

Ministering in War-Torn AreaNations around the world are careening into more anarchical uprisings – and Mexico is filling the brunt of that right now. Kevin Swanson interviews Mike Richardson, a missionary working in some of these war-torn areas in the northern regions of the nation. It is a strange irony that some of the most trying times may offer the best opportunities for the Gospel.

James Bond, Jason Bourne, Rambo. . .Jimmy ValiantAction thriller films define manhood, heroes, and virtue for many. But what if a couple of Christians produced an action thriller, complete with evil tyrants, dangerous scenarios, and men in need of redemption? Here Kevin Swanson interviews the director and producer (Nathaniel Darnell and Nathan Barnes), of a new action thriller with a twist – God is still sovereign, and man must be redeemed.

Despite the apparent strength of modern empires, they seem incredibly vulnerable to little guys in their basements, posting “secret” documents and shutting down Visa and Mastercard. It turns out that God is still sovereign over the Nebuchadnezzars who run the biggest empires on planet earth.

Impact and Backlash Kevin Swanson takes a look at 2,000 years of Jesus’ rule.   He has made an impact, but now it appears the opposition is not happy about it.  We have seen a 100 year backlash against the rule of Christ, and we use one easy example to illustrate this.  Every nation around the world refers to the year in terms of Christ’s birth.  But now, most if not all academic references to the year, are changing “the year of our Lord A.D.” to  “C.E.” or Common Era.

Homosexuality and Gender Neutral Bibles A public university in Augusta, Georgia threatens to excommunicate (dismiss) a student who refuses to change her views on homosexuality.  Demanding that the student attend a “gay pride” event and get re-educated, the university is committed to their orthodoxy and will not tolerate this “terrible” form of heterodox thinking. This leads to a discussion on church discipline.  The prevailing orthodoxy of the day seems to be in the direction of homosexuality and gender neutral Bibles.  Kevin Swanson also comments on the direction set by Zondervan as they scrap the old NIV in favor of a gender-neutral NIV.   The Marxist ideology is pressing hard to capture the entire evangelical church.

Debt-Free, Corporation-Free, Family-IntegratedWith family integrity disintegrating and the macro-economy disintegrating, what about putting the two words together? Family Economy. That's what Jim Miller from the Golden Rule Network did when he came home from his corporate job. His son returned home from the Air Force Academy and the family together built a household economy in a burgeoning HVAC business.

The Worldviews of FantasyThe present generation was raised on Harry Potter. It is the most popular book series and most popular movie series of all time, exceeding the box office receipts of Star Wars and Avatar! But what shall we say of this Dark Tale? The good guys are homosexuals and witches. And the bad guys definitely look uglier than the good guys. We’ve come a long way from the Bobbsey Twins. Not many kids raised on the Bobbsey Twins became interested in Necromancy, Human Sacrifice, and Homosexuality. The next twenty years are going to be. . . different, shall we say? Kevin Swanson interviews Christian fantasy author, Lee Duigon on the basic differences between corrupting man-centered witchcraft and God-centered story-telling.

Hanging on to the Biblical Family in the WestThe Gerrman chancellor finally admits that the Christian faith is weak in Germany, and being displaced by Islam.  Meantime, the last few Christian parents are in jail in Sweden and being prosecuted for living the Christian faith in Germany.    Back to America, the national debt is 3X what it was ten years ago, but the good news?  Video game sales are up 3 fold!   Commenting on these stories, Kevin Swanson encourages a biblical standard for the family, in this edition of Generations.

Relevant Irrelevance Os Guinness encourages Christians not to abandon the public schools, as this is the only way that we can keep the many faiths under the one state.  But what does this mean?  Must we support the old polytheism under statism, by jettisoning a Christian metaphysic in the science and history classes? Christians have worked hard to be relevant to evolutionists, public schools, and nudist colonies.  But have they lost the antithesis?   Kevin Swanson addresses these “sticky,” yet very important issues on this edition of Generations.

A Worthwhile Endeavor Taking a position on truth is pretty unpopular today, but there are still a few left who have the guts to do it.  Dr. James White is one of the nation’s most active Christian apologists and debaters, having debated atheists, Muslims, etc. over the last twenty years.   Here Kevin Swanson interacts with James on how to engage in the war of ideas.
