Jesus' Stern Warning to the Rich, Part 3

As long as there are people here on earth, wealth will always be created. However, like in all areas of life, there are requirements to enter into heaven. So, in the passage we are analyzing with the rich young ruler, Jesus was not introducing new revelation to human behavior and wealth. The rich young man and the disciples should have known the Law, the prophets, the Psalms and Solomon’s proverbs where much is said about how we are to deal with riches to be in good favor with God. Riches never mean that God approves the lifestyle of the rich.

When we don’t understand biblical history that is a tragic loss for us. However, when we have an open heart and mind to learn biblical and historical facts, it gives us a totally different perspective, one that makes absolute sense for all areas of life, including a full understanding how riches are to play in our lives without placing our trust in them, which would displace God in our hearts.

There is so much wealth in the world that people from different countries are making the list of the globally wealthy group. Forbes reports that there are 1,645 billionaires including 172 women. There is no doubt that wealthy people create products and jobs and pay a lot of taxes. They are philanthropists, who create foundations; they contribute to charities that are aligned with their worldview. So why did Jesus give a stern warning to the rich and what was that warning? Are the rich condemned for eternity for being rich? Does their generosity and philanthropy count for anything?

If Christ brought all the solutions to the human dilemma, why have things not changed in the world after two thousand years? Why are we still facing much of the same old problems and turmoil that past generations have lived and caused. The reason is that Christians are still walking in the futility of their minds instead of renewing them according to the standards of the new birth in Christ.

The greatest obstacle for God in the life of believers is when they don't understand the fullness of the new birth in Christ. God expects us to know that the new birth fills us with the fullness of God so “…that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known” (Ephesians 3:10).

Nena Arias

Is one of thirteen siblings; born, raised and educated in California. She was brought up in a Christian home, however her personal commitment to Christ happened at the age of seventeen which also included a simultaneous call to missionary work which she embraced with her whole heart. She answered this call and up until the present is actively involved in ministry alongside her husband, Ramon. Nena is an accomplished singer/minister and conference speaker. Her ministry for the last 40 years has taken her to several continents and nations such as, Mexico, Central and South America, Africa, Middle East, Europe, Canada and all across the continental United States and Hawaii.
