Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—he remains faithful forever. Psalm 146:3-6
What provides you with confidence? What brings a calmness and peace to your heart? What gives you hope? A thriving economy? A stable job? Your person in the White House? A hefty retirement account? A strong military?
Check out today's passage. Human beings—even the most powerful of them, even the best of them—cannot save. Man cannot give us what we need. Besides, death puts to rest any semblance of confidence in the powerful. On the day the dominant dies, his ability to enact plans dies with him.
In whom or in what do you gain your confidence? If your hope is not found in the Lord, sooner or later your teetering tower of trust will come crashing down. Without God it's just a matter of time before your faux calm turns to feverish chaos. But there is One who is eternal. "He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them—he remains faithful forever." Blessed is the one whose confidence is in Him.
Father, it is tempting to put my trust in the stuff and people around me. Never let me forget that You are the only One who will stand for eternity. Help me to follow hard after You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
