What's Hanging on the Walls of Your Home

January 3, 2011
Faith Externalized

Have you ever wondered why you can't find a Precious Moments doll in a Christian book store depicting David holding up the severed, bloody head of Goliath? Have you ever wondered why the Voice of the Martyrs doesn't sell Thomas Kinkade Drawings? Or have you ever wondered why it is that of the 100s of pictures of Noah's Ark on Google Images, you won't find one with the dead, bloated bodies of millions of people floating around the ark a picture that would present the real reason God brought the flood in the first place? Here Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner engage a lively discussion on Christian art forms, shallow theology, and what's hanging on their walls.

Will our Children Believe in Evolution?Incredibly, 40% of Americans still believe that the human is God-created. Yet on the other hand, most of these are the older folks. Sadly, the Gen X'ers and Millennial Generations are twice as likely to support homosexuality and evolution than were the "Greatest Generation" born in the 1920s and 1930s (in surveys taken in 2010). The trajectory for dysfunctional families and fractured worldviews has been set for the majority. So what trajectory are you building into your family? In this edition of the program, Kevin Swanson speaks of his own family and the powerful generational heritage received from his grandparents.

You Can Ruin Your Family as an Entrepreneur! The idea that pure entrepreneurism and American capitalism are the solutions to America’s socio-economic woes is wrong-headed and short-sighted.  This ignores the fact that THE FAMILY IS IMPORTANT!  Any form of materialism or capitalism or socialism or entrepreneurism that threatens family solidarity is to be rejected by those who maintain a biblical socio-economic worldview.  You can destroy your family as an entrepreneur as easily as you can do it in the corporate world. Here Kevin Swanson interviews Erik Weir from Weir Capital Management on the blessings of family-integrated economies and entrepreneurial endeavors done rightly.

Interview - Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr.The study of economics is shrouded in mystery and obfuscated by jargon. Economists that appear on the news shows give the impression that economics is beyond the capacity of most mortals; that it involves some combination of particle physics, snake handling and voodoo. Economics is not really all that difficult. It is the unsound practices of modern economics that need more elaborate excuses and confusing justifications. God provides in His word what is necessary for the man of God to be thoroughly equipped for every good work including the study of economics. If you refuse to heed the law of gravity you could get hurt; the laws of economics are no different. Dave Buehner discusses these issues with Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr., author of "Biblical Economics".

Interview: Dan FordBack in the 17th century, in the flurry of empire-building, slave-based economies, and mercantilism, there was a little experiment in family-based economies and colonies conducted on the shoreline of New England. Historian, Dan Ford relates the story of the founding of America and the blessing that God brought to this experiment (vs. what happened in the slave-based economies in Europe.)

Celebrating the Greatest Event that Ever HappenedThe mother-child-tree thing on December 25th is sometimes attributed to Nimrod from Babel in the annals of ancient history. But then Christians wanted to celebrate their own day, so they came up with "Christmas." The battle over culture is non-stop. Christians fight for their holidays, while pagans work to turn the culture their direction. The battle over symbols, holidays, and cultures rages. But Christians should work to capture every day for Jesus Christ.

Really Smart People Usually Vote LiberalAccording to recent surveys, only 5% of scientists profess to be Republicans. Most of the rest claim to be liberal, rational thinking, and well, you know, intelligent! They also tell us that the smartest states (with the most PhD's and MS degrees) are going to be Blue. It's the "du-u-mb" farm states and a few southerners that'll vote for the conservatives. So what gives? Are engineers generationally more conservative than scientists because they aren't on the government doll, I mean, government grants? Or is it just that the humanist university is by definition, the modern temple of the other religion that has taken over America - the naturalist - anti-supernaturalist metaphysic?

"Kill and Eat""Prairie Muffins shoot real good, too!" Kevin Swanson explains how daughter Rebekah killed her first deer in the back yard with a single shot from a lever-action 30-30. There are a hundred ways to re-integrate the family economy in the 21st century, and hunting is a great way to do it. We pray for our food. We thank God for our food. And, we explain to our children the reason why animals must die for us to live.

Mentorship Going ViralEconomies busting up, the integrity of the family breaking down, and educational systems failing. There is quite a bit of bad news out there right now. But one of the most exciting and hopeful developments in education and economics right now is happening in the explosion of mentorship. Mike Cheney is director of the AME Program (Apprenticeship, Mentorship, and Entrepreneurship) in Colorado. Already 28 states are involved, and the idea is coalescing. Mike gives some great examples of how it works in a variety of families. Do you have children 12-24 years old? You will get some terrific ideas on mentorship from this Generations broadcast!

A Biblical View of Dance Dance has been heavily sexualized, along with just about everything else in the present culture.  But Kevin Swanson wants Christians to engage culture AND community, and dance may be one way to pull it off.   To NOT do culture and community is not an option. Dancing is biblical.  There is absolutely no question about that.  So Christians must interact with the subject at some level.  Could it be a way to build community in a cold, institutionalized world?   Listen to the animated discussion on this edition of Generations!
