Bonhoeffer vs. the Third Reich

January 12, 2011
Interview: Author Eric Metaxas

When 4,000 pastors and priests joined to endorse Joseph Stalin as the honorary president of the Congress of Christians in Romania, one man stood up to oppose the motion – Richard Wurmbrand. In the 1930’s and 1940’s, one outspoken German opposed the Third Reich, the death camps, and Adolf Hitler, and he paid the ultimate price. Kevin Swanson interviews author Eric Metaxas on his defining biography of the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. History has a way of clarifying the true heroes. But what does all of this mean for Americans who face the same thing Germany faced in the 1930s – the weakening of the church, the rise of immorality and homosexuality, eugenics and abortion, and nihilism gone mainstream?

The U.S.S.A. America makes up 25% of the prison population in the world, while containing only 5% of the world population.  So, what gives?  Lew Rockwell explains that the tyranny is expanding to the arrests of little old ladies who forget to water their lawns and little ten year old boys who “fart” in class.  Kevin Swanson compares this to God’s civil laws that focus attention towards the gross offenders vs. petty crimes.  Also, God’s laws are particularly concerned about victim’s rights, while these big tyrannies are all concerned about remuneration to the state and incarcerating as many people as possible in slave-holding prisons.

Living in Pseudo-CommunitySome churches canceled their services on Sunday, December 26th so families can be together over the Christmas holidays! Meanwhile, the homosexual Metropolitan churches are sort of fizzling out – the generational vision is just. . . shall we say. . . “not happening?” Besides, the more inclusive, evangelical churches are finding ways to incorporate them into their congregations. Also, we're finding more churches going for the Big Screen Pastors – sort of like Cardboard pastors, except they talk to you from electronic screens. Some churches tout as many as “ten campuses” now. Not to miss out on any of this, Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner get into the game with their new on-line program designed to find just the right church for you: C-Harmony.com! Or maybe you'd like to attend I-Church.com and enjoy pseudo-relationships with all of the other little Avatars on the screen. It's a whole new church community for all those post-moderns with their brains stuffed in jars.

Kevin Swanson interviews successful entrepreneur, Dale Schamel on his business ventures, and how his family has developed various income streams, as they integrate the unique gifts and talents God has given each of them.

E-mail, Facebook, Satellite Cameras, DNA, Retinal Scans It is so much easier for governments to track their citizens than ever before. Technology has enabled agencies to collect hundreds of times more data on any individual person than at any other time in human history. Nero's system or Hitler's system would have been far more clumsy and inefficient than the tracking systems available for our governments today. How does a Christian react to this? Do we have anything to hide? And what information can and will be held against us when the concentration camps are set up in a city near you? Kevin Swanson addresses the privacy question from a biblical perspective on this edition of Generations.

The American Character SlidesRecent international studies continue to accentuate the failure of the American education systems. But more fundamentally, the Gen Y and Millennial generations are failing in character. Will the Millennials be working for Chinese employers by the year 2025? Kevin Swanson gets into the definition of character, and points out the difference between the Chinese or Japanese view of character, the western humanist view of character, and the Christian view.

The De-industrialization of the United StatesTwo stories collide on this edition of Generations.  On the one hand, there is the story relating the de-industrialization of the United States.  On the other hand, Newsweek Magazine notes that family-based businesses have fared far better in the economic down-turn than other businesses.  Kevin Swanson points out that it was family-owned businesses that built this nation.  It was only when these businesses went "public" that they began to take on extraordinary debt and make irresponsible decisions that ruined the economy in the long run.  What is it about family-based businesses that will provide for a sound economic future for our families and maybe even a nation?  Important stuff on this edition of Generations.

Faith ExternalizedHave you ever wondered why you can't find a Precious Moments doll in a Christian book store depicting David holding up the severed, bloody head of Goliath? Have you ever wondered why the Voice of the Martyrs doesn't sell Thomas Kinkade Drawings? Or have you ever wondered why it is that of the 100s of pictures of Noah's Ark on Google Images, you won't find one with the dead, bloated bodies of millions of people floating around the ark a picture that would present the real reason God brought the flood in the first place? Here Kevin Swanson and Dave Buehner engage a lively discussion on Christian art forms, shallow theology, and what's hanging on their walls.

Will our Children Believe in Evolution?Incredibly, 40% of Americans still believe that the human is God-created. Yet on the other hand, most of these are the older folks. Sadly, the Gen X'ers and Millennial Generations are twice as likely to support homosexuality and evolution than were the "Greatest Generation" born in the 1920s and 1930s (in surveys taken in 2010). The trajectory for dysfunctional families and fractured worldviews has been set for the majority. So what trajectory are you building into your family? In this edition of the program, Kevin Swanson speaks of his own family and the powerful generational heritage received from his grandparents.

You Can Ruin Your Family as an Entrepreneur! The idea that pure entrepreneurism and American capitalism are the solutions to America’s socio-economic woes is wrong-headed and short-sighted.  This ignores the fact that THE FAMILY IS IMPORTANT!  Any form of materialism or capitalism or socialism or entrepreneurism that threatens family solidarity is to be rejected by those who maintain a biblical socio-economic worldview.  You can destroy your family as an entrepreneur as easily as you can do it in the corporate world. Here Kevin Swanson interviews Erik Weir from Weir Capital Management on the blessings of family-integrated economies and entrepreneurial endeavors done rightly.
