Religion and Jesus
by Berni Dymet
Mark 5:22-23 Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, "My little daughter is at the point of death."
One of the things people sometimes say to me when they find out what I do - is that I'm a religious man. Hmm - that doesn't sit comfortably with me.
One day Jesus was being followed by a huge crowd and one of the local religious leaders - a man called Jairus came up to him and fell at his feet and begged Him - "Come and lay your hands on my daughter who's dying so that she would be healed and live". Jesus by now had a reputation of healing people. Hence the crowds I guess.
Now I want you to notice something with me here. Jairus was a man of reputation and stature. He was the leader of the local synagogue. A religious man.
And yet, He humbled himself by falling down at Jesus' feet to beg. Why?
Because with all his religion, training, position and teaching, he didn't have the power to heal his daughter. Only Jesus did.
That's the difference - between religion, and Jesus.
