Why Baptism?

What is the significance of water baptism? Jesus makes it clear in Mark chapter 16: "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved..." Obviously, Jesus is telling us that, for the believer, baptism is not an option, and that it's actually the next step in our walk with Christ after receiving Him for salvation. Today, so many equate salvation with infant baptism. Yet, Jesus states otherwise.
