In Everything Give Thanks

The holidays unfortunately have become so focused on the decorations and the dinner parties that the real meanings behind them have easily gotten lost. But don’t you love Thanksgiving! At least at this special time of the year many families and friends gather together and they do reflect on what they’re thankful for.

I encourage you not to miss it. Don’t miss focusing on how God has brought you through one more year. This may have been a painful year, a year you’re glad is behind you. But think of the goodness of the Lord and His faithfulness to you.

My friend, good or bad, are you choosing to be thankful in all things. Oh, how I know this is not easy. You may have had disappointments that you never dreamed would happen. What do you do? Will you choose fear or will you choose to believe God and walk in faith?

Are you giving thanks in everything? Faith and giving thanks go together because faith means taking God at His Word and doing what He tell us, and He tells us “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Usually God doesn’t let us know immediately why we should give thanks, but He tells us to walk in faith and to thank Him in our faith. You thank Him despite your circumstances and you give thanks and rest in His sovereignty. Are you resting?

Let’s look at Psalm 37:5-8:

“Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday. Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who carries out wicked schemes. Cease from anger and forsake wrath; do not fret; it leads only to evildoing.”

These are marvelous verses to meditate on. Whatever is going on in your life; daily commit your way to the Lord. Ask Him to help your unbelief and trust Him. Cling to His promises, cling to what you know, then rest. Rest and wait.

Every day is a brand-new day. God is in control and never out of control, because He rules over all—the small and the big things, the tragedies and the triumphs—and because He loves us with an everlasting love, we can give thanks in everything. Therefore, in all things—in everything—we can “give thanks.”

Thank You, Lord, for the assurance of Your awesome sovereignty. Thank You that everything that happens to me is part of Your will, and thank You that every aspect of Your will is based on Your love for me.
