Pastors Opt out of Social Security - How to Get Off the Sinking Ship

September 28, 2020

The Social Security fund was supposed to deplete in 2045, then 2035, then 2032, and now 2031.  Some Americans have the opportunity to exempt themselves from social security, but would they do it if they had the chance? Less than 20% of pastors (in one survey) have opted out of social security. Will churches prepare to reassume responsibilities they have abdicated to the state?

Are the American Country Music awards bringing a tremendous Christian reformation to America?  Carrie Underwood gives “all glory to God,” and Rhett acknowledges “my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”  However, don't forget this is the genre where the guy “gets laid and saved” in the same song, and Carrie Underwood continues her “Love Wins” tour, hammering on people who love the real Jesus and keep His commandments. The bifurcation of faith and life, or Sunday and Monday, creates a syncretism not unlike what Jeroboam introduced when he made nice little cow idols for Jehovah worship.

This is a time of great testing for Republicans, for President Trump, and for pastors like Tim Keller. The divisions are occurring across the nation, but will the divisions be set according to God’s Law — God’s definition of right and wrong, or arbitrary definitions and emphases? The next appointment of a US Supreme Court Justice is a major test for the President. Will this be another Justice Thomas, or another Justice Gorsuch or Sandra Day O’Connor?

Should Christians take advantage of welfare programs, or should they use tax breaks, when the system is filled with inequity? How does a Christian get along in a system shot through with stealing, cheating, preferential treatments, etc.? These are not always easily answered questions. Kevin and Bill present the principles, but challenge families to make principled choices in their own varied situations.

Young children are increasingly being sexualized by films like Frozen, Cuties, etc., but what is the real sin of it? Does the Bible really condemn pre-marital sexuality? What is the focal point we present for our daughters, when it comes to presentation?  The world trains women in the Proverbs 5 and Proverbs 7 mode, but our focus is Godward, not man-ward or self-ward.

While Christians were allowing for easy divorce and adultery, and still opposing homosexuality, they were grossly inconsistent and hypocritical.  However, Christian leaders are now moving towards approving both, lending to more consistency in their apostasy.  We go over the biblical language relating to divorce given by our Lord in the Gospels.

The false doctrines of racism and racial justice is dividing the church and Barna’s survey is not helping the situation. But, if the church would hold to the commandments of God, the confusion and disagreements would largely disappear. What does God’s law tell us about big government solutions to problems like ethnic hatred and police brutality? Instead of looking to governments to change the hearts of men, would Christians rely more upon the power of the Gospel?

Ligonier Ministries teamed up with LifeWay Research for the biennial “State of Theology” survey to examine the differences between everyday Americans and Evangelicals on their beliefs about God, truth, the Bible, and ethical issues. They spoke to a representative sample of 3,000 people. Guest host Adam McManus interviews Dr. Stephen Nichols, the President of Reformation Bible College and the Chief Academic Officer for Ligonier Ministries, as they examined statements like: “God accepts the worship of all religions including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam”, “Jesus was a great teacher, but He was not God”, “Everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature”, “Modern science disproves the Bible”, “Christians should be silent on issues of politics”, and “The Bible is the highest authority for what I believe.”  Respondents indicated whether they strongly agree, somewhat agree, are not sure, somewhat disagree, or strongly disagree.  Look at the key findings and at the 35 statements as a family and examine the Scriptures connected with each.  The results reveal that Evangelicals desperately need to study God’s Word. On September 9 th , Netflix released a disturbing French film entitled “Cuties”. According to its original synopsis, Netflix said, “Amy, 11, became fascinated with a twerking dance crew. Hoping to join them, she starts to explore her femininity, defying her family’s traditions.” CitizenGo rightly reminds concerned citizens that in the last year alone, Netflix glorified blasphemy through “The First Temptation of Christ” and sexual violence through “365 Days.” Now, they’ve reached a new low by sexualizing 11-year-old girls. One Christian leader said, “Every adult involved in the production, marketing, and distribution of this film should be registered as a sex offender.” Guest host Adam McManus interviews Linda Harvey, Founder of MissionAmerica.com, who urges Christians to immediately drop their subscriptions to Netflix. Based on Ephesians 5:11, McManus asks you to urge your state’s Attorney General to prosecute Netflix for obscenity involving minors, to sign the Citizen Go petition to Netflix with 220,000 signatures now, and to protect your own children from exposure to the world’s dangerous messages.

Guest host Adam McManus talks with Patti Garibay, the founder of American Heritage Girls, a Christian version of the Girl Scouts. In this second installment of two conversations, Patti, a Girl Scouts parent volunteer, shares her outrage with the group for making the pledge to God optional, for advocating moral relativism, and for championing a disturbing weekend called “Sexuality & You” for 12 to 14-year- olds which celebrated gender confusion and sexual perversion antithetical to God’s design. She empathized with Habakkuk, the prophet, who cried out, “How long, O Lord, must I call for help? But You do not listen! Must I forever see these evil deeds? Why must I watch all this misery?” (Habakkuk 1:2-3) After trying to reform the Girl Scouts from within, she felt God calling her to found American Heritage Girls, a Christ-centered adventure program for girls (5-18) whose troops are hosted in 1,200 churches and have 56,000 members nationwide. It’s all chronicled in her book Why Curse the Darkness When You Can Light a Candle? If you missed Part 1 of Adam’s interview, in which Patti shares her life story about how God used her wheelchair-bound father and her alcoholic mother, click here.

Guest host Adam McManus talks with Patti Garibay, the founder of American Heritage Girls, a Christian version of the Girl Scouts. In this first installment of two conversations with Patti, she shares her story of having grown up in a home where her father contracted the debilitating disease called Multiple Sclerosis and her mother became a hardened alcoholic. When she began dating her future husband, she became pregnant out of wedlock at 19. Patti shares the dramatic story about her visit to Planned Parenthood. And, ultimately, both Patti and her husband, Pat, trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior. It’s all chronicled in her book Why Curse the Darkness When You Can Light a Candle? Tomorrow, she will share how deeply disturbed she became when the Girl Scouts, where she was a parent volunteer, began to shun God, embrace moral relativism, and advocate a secular worldview related to sexuality in particular.
