One of the most powerful allusions to Christ’s passion in the Old Testament is found in the story of Abraham offering his son Isaac as a sacrifice. But while Abraham’s faith and obedience deserve high praise on our parts, so does the obedience of Isaac. From Isaac’s actions we see a perfect picture of what the Apostle Paul commanded in Romans 12:1: that we “offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, for this is our spiritual act of worship.” The Christian life is all about stepping up to the altar . . . and staying there.
