Relational Churches and How to Shepherd Them

September 28, 2010
Real Accountability Kevin Swanson and Marcus Serven discuss the challenges and the blessings of forming a relational church in an institutionalized, programmic day. Creating an atmosphere in which people can sin against each other and be forgiven, and forgive is a strange phenomena in a day where isolation is the status quo. It's a mess! But it's God's mess. Just a couple of shepherds with muddy boots clomp into the studio to talk this one through!

Impeach the Judges or Modify the Constitutions? Increasingly, federal and state courts are legislating from the bench, usurping power not delegated to them. But why do the people elect the men who appoint them? And why are judges typically far more liberal than the people doing the electing? Kevin Swanson interviews Bob Vander Plaats, representing Iowa for Freedom in his attempts to reform the judicial system in Iowa. While the referendum processes were intended to allow for a balance of powers, it will be our leaders and the universities they attend that will set the direction for the country. So is it really worthwhile passing legislation to modify constitutions, when the judges will interpret the constitutions any which way they want to? This may be the time for Judicial impeachments. But more importantly, what do we do about the universities and law schools that set the philosophical directions for the nation?

Offending the teachers A group of Christian students in a New Mexico school where suspended because they gave their teachers a gift, a box of Krispy Kreme Donuts. This was no ordinary box of Krispy Kreme donuts though, this box had Psalm 139 on it. The teachers were greatly offended & immediately suspended some of the students & punished the rest by making them spend 4 hours on a Saturday sitting alone in the classroom. Is there a battle of worldviews going on here? Also completely unrelated to this story, the principal of that New Mexico school said "I do not like Christians". Kevin & Dave analyze this story & discuss how to train your children to cast down corrupt worldviews & everything that exalts itself above the name of Christ.

Interview: Author Chris Brauns What distinguishes a Christian above all is the capacity and the willingness to forgive. But forgiveness is a lost art, especially when it is hardly taught or practiced. If we are trying to rebuild the family, renew family relationships, and strengthen marriages, it simply WILL NOT HAPPEN unless we learn to live the life of forgiveness. In one of the most powerful interviews we’ve ever done, Author Chris Brauns unpacks forgiveness, clears up a number of misconceptions, and provides a terrific vision for a life bathed in forgiveness!

Bitter Fruits of Bad Theology With the ongoing breakdown of the family and faith, increasingly horrific reports surface detailing stories of children sexually abused in Christian boarding schools. Some adult children coming out of homeschools also complain of abuse, having been raised in what they call “legalistic” homes. As the evangelical faith wanders theologically and as family relationships suffer badly, these sorts of testimonies will only increase over the next few decades. What is the relationship of rules and relationships? How about faith and works? Heart and hands? Authority and humility? God's sovereignty and human responsibility? Tying in his current blog post on this broadcast, Kevin Swanson points out the wild swings Christians make from heterodoxy to heterodoxy, as the faith disappears generation by generation. The Christian family is on the edge of extinction. The apostasy in the west is finally reaching full force in our country (America). If you want to salvage faith and family, you better start with some half-way decent definitions. What you teach your children about the faith is important. As a pastor and a father, Kevin Swanson presents several important balances that are lost to the average evangelical today.

Federal Debt and Shack ups Barack Obama's administration has racked up more debt in 19 months, than all presidents combined from Washington through Reagan! At the present rate, Obama would add another $8-10 Trillion in eight years. Of course, George W. Bush added about $4 Trillion in his eight years. Kevin Swanson also interacts with the recent World Magazine article on the rising shack up rate, which is now 13X what it was in 1970! With everything going hyperbolic on the exponential curve, how does this bode for the future of a nation?

Interview: Stephen Arterburn The battle has only heated up! Since the 1960's, an increasingly sexualized world has only become more ubiquitous, more aggressive, and more decadent. A 29-year-old man sits in a hotel room on a business trip with nobody except his computer, a television set with all the selections, and plenty of options in the big city. So what's wrong with this situation? Do we set ourselves up for failure? In this edition of Generations, author of the classic series entitled "Every Man's Battle," Stephen Arterburn provides practical, helpful advice for men engaging the battle.

Interview: Darrow Miller The breakdown of the Christian faith came about by means of a compartmentalization and fragmentation of life. The family was ripped away from our work life. Worship was separated from work. Somehow, we were all forced to take a materialistic way of looking at work. Enter Darrow Miller and his excellent work on "A Biblical Theology of Vocation." Darrow shares an excellent vision applying biblical principles to agriculture, accounting, medical work, engineering, and communication. He points out that all of us are in "Full-time Ministry," so long as we are serving Christ in His kingdom!
