Persecution and Faith in Sweden - Signs of Life in a Socialist Dystopia

May 10, 2011
Sweden presents itself as the socialist utopia of the modern world. But as it rids itself of the remnants of faith, family, and freedom it is slowly turning into a rather dreary dystopia. The country has an unprecedented 55% illegitimacy rate! It's standard of living is almost half of what we enjoy in America. The few Christian schools have purged biblical thinking in favor of endorsing homosexuality and evolution – thanks largely to pressure from a draconian state. Is the faith entirely dead there? Is the family entirely obsolete in this socialist haven? Or are there tiny slivers of light? Kevin Swanson interview homeschooling leader and father, Mike Chapa, who just returned from an important visit with those suffering persecution at the hands of the state in Sweden. You will be amazed at the death of a culture, and signs of life that still hang on in the darkest corners in the world.

Here is one of the most interesting stories you'll ever hear! It is the story of how a Planned Parenthood Director decided to walk across the street and join the pro-life organization that had opposed her for eight years! Worldviews clashed. The truth is camouflaged by a hundred layers of deceit. But by the grace of God, some make it out. Abby Johnson tells her story on this edition of Generations. It is the dramatic story of a former Planned Parenthood Leader's eye-opening journey across the life line. You will get a look from both sides of the fence on this abortion issue. How to Planned Parenthood employees view themselves? How do they look at the pro-life community? How do we penetrate the powerful systems, the lies, and the funding that buttresses the pro-death culture in this country? Why is the church largely to blame for its failure to take a stand on this issue?

Osama Bin Laden, Libya, Afghanistan, and Iraq. One of the purposes of civil government is to defend the nation's borders from direct attack, and to protect its citizenry from foreign aggressors. Kevin Swanson interviews Doug Phillips on America's last constitutionally legitimate war, World War II. What might we teach our children about this important historical chapter in American history? A grateful nation will honor their fathers for the positive contribution made in previous generations. This may be our last opportunity to do that for the World War II generation.

Random attacks on the family-integrated churches seem to pop up around the internet from time to time. Evidently, the modern church isn't all that keen on somebody upsetting the model de jure. Being careful not to name any names, Kevin Swanson interacts with the articles, the resolutions, etc. that oppose these reforming movements. Most attempts to reform argue over emphases, and much can be left up to liberty and wisdom calls. But is it possible that the traditions of men make the laws of God of none effect, here and there? In the end, the fire will tell whether our arguments were over camels or gnats, whether Christian ministries compromised with worldly methods for educating and disciple-ing our children. Some will have more wood, hay, and stubble; and others will have the gold, silver and precious stones.

Apocalyptic fever is in the air . . . and has been since the 1800's. But the date setters are always wrong and then face their own crisis in credibility. Kevin Swanson interviews Gary DeMar, author of "Last Day's Madness" on the recent date from Harold Camping: May 21 2011. Is it better to leave eschatology for the prophecy nuts? Do we abandon it altogether? Or would it be better to say a few things, and leave a lot of other things unsaid and uncertain? Here is a balanced discussion on Christ's return, the present socio-economic crises, and our mission on earth.

Here is a beautiful story of a family that raised an autistic boy - the grace, the pain, the challenges, and the blessing. Is there a place for professionals, and how important is love in the equation? Kevin Swanson interviews Cathy Steele, author of the book "Too Wise to be Mistaken, Too Good to be Unkind." This is one of the best books available today on the special needs child, from a distinctively Christian perspective. Here is a homeschooling family found blessing as they consistently followed the leading of God's Word. In one sense, every child is a special child, and this program will help every parent raise that special child.

It is sometimes difficult for Christians to understand the times in which they live, when they do not know where they stand in history. Church history is so much more than the last fifteen years in some local body. The writings of the church fathers contain a treasure of insight and wisdom that we ill afford to ignore. For many they are the antidote to the modern confusion in theology, and the sign posts that help keep the church from heresy. In this episode of Generation Dave Buehner speaks with Michael Haykin about the fathers of the church and how to get started on your own journey of discovery of the fathers of the church.

There are more dangers in the info tech age than you could ever imagine. Blogger, Tim Challies speaks to the temptations, the traps, and the ruinous effects the internet can bring to families in the present milieu. But it is a double-edged sword. It can be used for good. Does it disrupt relationships? Will it create healthy marriages and families? Or will it introduce unhealthy addictions? After only 10 years of experience with the phenomenon of the internet, the jury is still out for deliberation on that one. But Tim offers a careful assessment of the risks and the benefits of this powerful tool in this interview based on his new book “The Next Story, Life and Faith After the Digital Explosion.”

Through social security, taxation, debt, and the estate tax, the governments have done everything they could do break down the economic solidarity of the family. There are still a few families that are desperately seeking islands of freedom that might empower the family as a viable institution at least in their own generations. Kevin Swanson interviews Adam Brink, CPA, on the establishment of trusts – revocable and irrevocable. We also take a look at the history of the Amish in their battle against the social security tax.

The questions relating to Christians and society, relevance vs. isolation fly around us with an intensive fury, especially as Christianity continues its slow death in the west. Should Christians be involved in politics? Should Christians create inner-city ministries, and endorse socialism, public schools, and homosexuality? So many perspectives, so much confusion! Two kingdom theories. Pietist isolationism. Social gospel liberals. Evangelical activists. Post-modern city ministries. Kevin Swanson interacts with each of these wildly differing perspectives on this edition of Generations.

President Obama holds an Easter Prayer Breakfast, and Time Magazine features Rob Bell's question on the cover, "What if there's no hell?" Kevin Swanson returns with Paschal's wager again, "What if there is a hell?" He also answers the question, "Is Gandhi in hell?" The foundations of the faith in America are completely eroded. The 9.0 earthquake has already hit. Jon Meacham from Time tells us "A massive shift is coming in what it means to be a Christian." The fact is, the shift is happening right now.
