Numbers 3, 4

February 7, 2022

What job has the Holy Spirit given you to do? In Numbers 3 and 4, learn about the service of the priests, which is a picture of how the church should function today. If one of the priests did not do his job in the tabernacle service, then everyone suffered. Discover how our individual, God-given gifts can be indispensable when we use them to further the gospel message.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Are you born of God? In Numbers 1 and 2, discover the importance of being born again into God’s family. Dr. McGee talks about being able to know your “pedigree” as a Christian. Only when we are born again, through Jesus’ blood, can we learn to truly walk and live in the Spirit.

Welcome to the book of Numbers, friends. Dr. McGee calls this unique book of the Bible, “The Book of Pilgrim’s Progress,” because of the practical wisdom it offers. Through learning about the first census, discover how God deeply loves individuals. He cares to know your name, just as He cared to know every person named in the book of Numbers.

Have you ever surprised a friend or family member? Imagine Jesus after the Resurrection, surprising all His friends and family. During those last days before He ascended to heaven, He did a lot of walking and talking with people He loved. As we close our study in Luke, may you be reminded of the joy and hope in walking with Jesus.

Welcome to the empty tomb, friends. Jesus did not roll the stone away to let Himself out, but to welcome others in. Aren’t you glad it’s empty? Today on the Bible Bus, we learn about Jesus’ burial—which didn’t last long—and then get to celebrate His resurrection.

Luke presents the events of Jesus’ crucifixion from a historical and legal perspective, showing that the trial of Jesus was one of the most unfair trials in history. Nevertheless, Jesus humbled Himself and gave Himself willingly for our sin. Witness Jesus’ death as it fulfilled the Law, proved science, and broke the bonds of religion. Find freedom today at the foot of the cross.

Let’s remove our spiritual shoes as we stand outside the sacred Garden of Gethsemane and watch. Jesus went through a solemn, heartbreaking night of prayer and suffering. The mystery of this night is not ours to uncover, but we can show gratefulness to the Lord for His sacrifice. Worship the Lord at the gate of Gethsemane, even if we don’t know all the answers.

Get ready to partake in the last Passover and watch Jesus turn it into a new feast—the Lord’s Supper. Then, see Jesus as our Intercessor. In Luke 22:32, Jesus said to Peter, “But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail.” Jesus said these words just before letting Peter know he would deny Him three times. Be encouraged to know that, even if we fail, our faith won’t.

God doesn’t want your money; He wants your heart. In Luke 21, Jesus used the widow who gave two mites—all that she had—as an example of grace giving. She trusted the Lord to provide for her. Follow along in Luke 21 to be reminded that it’s really not about what you give—but what you keep for yourself—that matters to God.

Jesus welcomes our questions, but we need to approach Him as He teaches us to approach all things— humbly. In Luke 20, the Pharisees, Sadducees, priests, and scribes all questioned Him—but not humbly. They were trying to test Him and trap Him so they could prove He was a false prophet. Listen in and notice how Jesus responds with grace, humility, power, and authority.

Get a glimpse of Jesus and He’ll change your whole life. Zacchaeus wasn’t expecting to talk to Jesus at all; he just wanted to catch a glimpse of Him. But Jesus had better plans. Listen in as Dr. McGee shares how God used this somewhat humorous interaction to teach us that “the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
