Dr. J. Vernon McGee

Numbers 27:1—28:2

February 25, 2022

The children of Israel have traveled a long way with Moses as their meek, steady leader. Sadly, Moses prepares for death as his people get ready to enter the Promised Land. In preparation for his death, Moses is instructed by God to appoint one of his servants as Israel’s new leader—Joshua. Dr. McGee encourages us that God uses ordinary people—those who obey Him in the mundane—to do great things for Him.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

We left off with Balaam’s fourth prophecy about the Star of Jacob. In today’s lesson, Dr. McGee draws a parallel between this prophecy and the star that led the magi to Christ in the New Testament. In Numbers 24, 25, and 26, learn about the second census and watch a new generation rise in Israel.

Have you ever heard an animal talk? In Numbers 22 and 24, God used reluctant Balaam to speak His words as a prophet. When he tried to resist, God caused his donkey to rebuke him. In the end, Balaam could not curse the nation of Israel as he intended, but he could only bless them. Discover how God used a worldly man to deliver some of the first major prophecies regarding Israel as a nation.

Things are finally looking up. After all that wandering, the children of Israel begin their journey into the Promised Land again. Not only that, but they experience their first victory against the Canaanites! In Numbers 21 and 22, discover how murmuring can turn to thanksgiving, see the symbolism behind the brass serpent, and meet Balaam the Midianite. The children of Israel are ready to enter the Promised Land. Are you ready?

Wandering without a home for 40 years in a dry, desolate wilderness would be miserable. In Numbers 20, discover what years of wandering from God does to even the best Christians. More importantly, see Christ as our merciful, loving High Priest, who never changes and never leaves us.

Imagine your salary was based solely on the generosity of your neighbors. In Numbers 18 and 19, we learn the priests were set apart from the Israelites and were not to inherit any land. Instead, the Israelites supported them with tithes and offerings. As we learn about God’s instructions for the Levites, we’ll see how important it is in our families and churches to bear each other’s burdens with love and prayer.

Jealousy really is a monster. In Numbers 16 and 17, jealousy stirs leaders of Israel to rebellion against Moses and, ultimately, against God. Follow along as Dr. McGee teaches about the danger of jealousy, the significance of our spiritual gifts, God’s final authority in judgment, and—of course—more murmuring from the people of Israel.

By the time we reach Numbers 15, a lot has changed. God turned His back on Israel for their unbelief and they began to wander in the wilderness. Although it seems like all hope is lost, Dr. McGee shares that God’s plan was not destroyed. God made a promise to His people, and He will deliver them to the Promised Land. Find out how.

When we lose sight of God, we find ourselves in scary unknowns. The people of Israel sent twelve spies into the land of Canaan, which Dr. McGee points out was not God’s idea. In Numbers 13 and 14, discover what happens to the nation of Israel when they go ahead of God and try to do things on their own. Their fear leads them to a critical point of decision between belief and unbelief.

How often we lose sight of God’s faithfulness. In Numbers 11, the children of Israel lost sight of God’s faithful provision and began to complain about the manna. They didn’t even have to do anything to get this manna except sit there and wait for it to appear. Yet they had the audacity to complain. Israel’s ungratefulness leads us to a somewhat painful but necessary truth: We are often just as forgetful and ungrateful.

1 Corinthians 14:40 tells us, “Let all things be done decently and in order.” If you haven’t noticed yet, God likes to do things in an organized, orderly manner—especially with the children of Israel. In this lesson, learn about God’s incredible attention to detail, the sufficiency of God’s leading, and the danger of complaining.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
