Dr. J. Vernon McGee

Luke 19

January 24, 2022

Get a glimpse of Jesus and He’ll change your whole life. Zacchaeus wasn’t expecting to talk to Jesus at all; he just wanted to catch a glimpse of Him. But Jesus had better plans. Listen in as Dr. McGee shares how God used this somewhat humorous interaction to teach us that “the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Think of that one friend you just love spending time with. That’s how it would have felt to be with Jesus. He was a serious, perfect person, but that didn’t mean He wasn’t fun and enjoyable to be with. People flocked to Him for a reason—He was likeable! Be welcomed today into the company of Jesus as both our Lord and friend.

Have a little faith, and God will take care of the rest. When some of Jesus’ instructions seemed difficult or impossible to follow, the apostles asked, “Lord, increase our faith.” What did Jesus do? He simply continued to teach them that their duty as His followers was to have faith in Him. In today’s lesson, learn more about forgiveness, faith, and the soul’s final destination—either heaven or hell.

Too often, we esteem people or things that have little to do with the message of the gospel. Jesus makes some bold statements in Luke 16. He said to the Pharisees, “What is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God” (Luke 16:14). Follow along as Dr. McGee teaches through the parable of the unjust steward and reminds us that we cannot serve two masters. Listen to the bold statements Jesus makes, and discover how they apply to us today.

True blessing and honor are produced by humility. Today on the Bible Bus, we’ll see the disciples embarrass themselves a little bit. When they all rushed to get the best seat at the dinner table, Jesus gently rebuked them and gave them a lesson on humility. He encouraged them to take the lower place, befriend the outcasts, and to give without expecting anything in return.

We’re living in an upside-down kingdom, where Satan and sin have permeated all that God intended for good. So, what is the true kingdom of God like? Jesus asks this important question and answers it with two parables. Discover the hope we have in Christ’s return to establish His kingdom here on earth. Only then will we have real peace, healing, and joy.

When Jesus knew that heavenly language would be hard to understand, He told stories that used our earthly vernacular to give us a comparison.  In Luke 12, He uses parables to teach life-changing truths to His followers. Today, those truths can still apply to us. Listen to Jesus as He uncovers the Pharisees’ hypocrisy, teaches people to fear the Lord, and reminds His followers that, “it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32).

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
