Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Do you think God can use you? Are you sensing a need to be part of something bigger—something great? In this study, Dr. J. Vernon McGee is very clear that every Christian has a responsibility to get involved in God’s work around the world. So, follow along as King Cyrus gives the people of Israel permission to return to Israel and restores the vessels taken by Nebuchadnezzar from the temple in Jerusalem.

Known mainly as a priest and scribe, Ezra also contributed to the Old Testament canon—which means he was part of deciding what books of Israel’s history would be considered God’s Word. He was led by the Spirit of God and, as Dr. McGee points out, he was used by God to lead a revival—not by methods or organization, but through God’s Word alone. Would you like to have a revival in your own heart and life? Find out how as we study the Old Testament book of Ezra.

The church at Corinth was just like any church today. May the themes of diversity, unity, freedom, and love make an indelible mark on your life as we close our study of 1 Corinthians. Paul ends his letter with a reminder to be cheerful givers and to “let all that you do be done with love.” And on that high note, we’ll say goodbye to the church at Corinth—for now.

Plants don’t look anything like the seeds they grew from; they look stronger, fuller, and better. Paul likens the earthly body to a dead seed that will be planted and raised up as a flourishing plant. Just like seeds, our earthly bodies will grow into fruitfulness. Discover the truth about our resurrected bodies, eternal life, and the Holy Spirit in us that conquers death. Someday, your broken body will be raised up as glorious—“sown in weakness, raised in power.”

Do you ever feel bad about your body? Take heart—you’re going to get a new one. Every child of God is promised a place in His kingdom, and with that place, a new spiritual body. First Corinthians 15:44 describes our bodies as “sown a natural body, raised a spiritual body.” Health and wholeness will be an everyday thing in God’s kingdom.

Jesus’ resurrection turned faith into a reality. When people saw Jesus face-to-face after He died on the cross and rose again, their lives were changed forever. Paul was one of those people. Seeing Jesus—the fulfillment of prophecy and God’s promises—turned his life around. As you study God’s Word today, may you be reminded of the unchangeable, verifiable reality of the hope we have in Christ and His coming kingdom.

Don’t believe the lie that you don’t matter or can’t contribute to the church. Discover the joy of connecting with other believers through worship, spiritual gifts, and fellowship in the Holy Spirit.

Some things are too beautiful for words. In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul writes to the Corinthians about God’s love. Follow along as Dr. McGee teaches through the “Love Chapter” and reminds us that God’s love is what motivates us to love others and gives energy to our spiritual gifts. Without God’s love, life loses its meaning and sweetness.

Are you ready for an anatomy lesson? Paul uses the metaphor of the human body to get the Corinthians to see that their greatest weakness could also be their greatest strength. The differences they were dividing themselves over could just as easily bring unity. Just like parts of the body, each member has the choice to work toward either the benefit of or detriment to the body of Christ.

Heartfelt gifts are always special to receive. God wanted the Corinthians’ hearts, not just their talent or performance. When we use our gifts for God, they are to be an outward expression of our inner connection with the Holy Spirit and His work in our lives. Today, Dr. McGee teaches us the difference between spiritual gifts and natural abilities, and how the Holy Spirit cannot be absent in either if God is to be glorified.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
