Saul and David: A Contrast

August 14, 2022

From the outside, Saul and David seemed similar. Both were regal, handsome, and victorious in battle. But look a little deeper and the differences between the two men are glaringly obvious. In this study, Dr. J. Vernon McGee tells us more about these stark contrasts and how they mirror the disparities between Jesus Christ and the Antichrist.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Dr. McGee retells perhaps the most familiar Bible story to everyone who has ever attended Sunday school—that of David and Goliath. We often miss the spiritual overtones to the story because of the spectacular exploits of David. In his usual style, Dr. McGee digs out “splendid spiritual truths” from this simple story.

If salvation is by good works the question has always been, “How many good works must be completed to be saved?” But one can never do enough good works to merit salvation. This is clearly portrayed in the life of Cornelius, Peter’s first gentile convert.

Jesus Christ came to this earth to suffer and die, was buried and rose from the dead after three days, and then ascended back to the Father in heaven. But until the time of His second coming, He is still busy at work for all those who believe.

Of all the judges that God called to serve Him, Samson probably had the greatest opportunity to succeed like no other judge before him. But his weakness for women and his self-centered and selfish attitude made him one of the greatest failures. However, God has much to teach us through the life of a man who failed to be faithful to the Lord.

In the days of the judges there was a man who sacrificed his daughter to the Lord because of the oath he swore, but did he really sacrifice her? That has been the burning question for many as they consider the Scriptures concerning Jephthah and his daughter.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
