Jeremiah: God’s Crybaby

June 30, 2024

If you had to choose a man to give a harsh message to an unresponsive and hostile audience, would you pick someone with tender emotions who would likely cry about the message he had to deliver? That's the kind of man God chose to bring a tough message to His people.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Over 40 years ago, Dr. McGee said that “lawlessness is growing and will finally break out until it actually is world revolution.” Lawlessness began with the fall of man in Genesis chapter 3, and according to Scripture it will culminate in the person of the Antichrist during the Great Tribulation.

Paul wraps up his first letter to the Thessalonians with instructions for Christians to follow as we look for Jesus Christ’s return. These are practical instructions, designed to impact us on the sidewalks of life—wherever we are called to walk. One of them is to “not quench the Spirit.” But what does that mean? Dr. McGee gives us three commands  we must carry out before we can see the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

What happens if we die before the Rapture? That’s one of the many important questions new and confused believers in the church in Thessalonica were asking of Paul. Find out exactly what happens when Jesus calls His church out of this world and why it's so important to us now.

(Isaiah 55:1-3) Are we saved because God sovereignly chooses us to be saved or because we choose salvation of our own free will? Are these two contradictory or can they be reconciled?

(Isaiah 53) When we consider the powerful arm of the Lord, we might think about how He delivered Israel from Egypt or the fire sent down from heaven during Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal.  But what about the mighty arm of God as revealed in the cross?

For centuries, man has been seeking the idyllic form of society where all people live in perfect harmony—where poverty and sickness have been abolished and prosperity exists for all. But how do these man-made visions compare with the God-given revelation about the coming Millennium?

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
