When Jesus comes again

April 28, 2023

“Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.” Now when He comes again, He’s coming in judgment, and there’s nothing wrong with this. The whole tenor of Scripture, including the New Testament, is that He’s coming in judgment. And we have no more vivid and dramatic picture than you have in the nineteenth chapter of the book of Revelation when John said he saw a door open in heaven and One on a white horse coming forth. He’s coming forth conquering and to conquer, my friend. Now that is the picture that the Word of God presents. Maybe you don’t like it, but it’s in the Word of God.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

And how this man Nehemiah was raised up of God to encourage God’s people. You see, he just didn’t stay down yonder and pray. He did something about it. Fact of the matter is, you’ll find that he’ll encourage the people to pray and work at the same time. And how we need that today, my beloved. We need prayer, real prayer. Prayer that comes from a burdened heart. And then, my beloved, a prayer that will lead out into action, demonstrating by the life today that we have submitted to our own prayers, that we mean business with God. God hears and answers prayer like that.

Now we come to another marvelous prayer of David in Psalm 143 here. And here you have an urgent appeal of this man for help. And this is a very wonderful—oh, this is a marvelous psalm, and you see David again, no inhibitions; just opens up his heart to God. “Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.” It’s a great prayer, and it’s one that can fit into your experience and my experience today. And it’s a prayer that we can rest upon the faithfulness of God and the righteousness of God to forgive our sin.

“I poured out my complaint before him; I showed before him my trouble.” And this is Psalm 142:2 that I’ve just read. In other words, he laid before God everything that was in his heart and in his life. And I think that’s the way that we should pray today. This idea today we’re to pray around something or we’re to rationalize in our prayer or we are to pray all the way around Robin’s barn, I think we ought to just come right down to it and get right down to the nitty gritty and tell God everything in our lives. You can tell Him about your temptations. You can tell Him about everything.

Prayer should have some background to it. It should be backed up by a life. The Lord Jesus has made it very clear that today if we expect God to hear and answer our prayers, that there must be in our lives that obedience to Him. This idea today that we can just live any way and expect God to answer prayer is a big mistake. He says, “If ye shall ask anything in My name, I will do it.” Then He didn’t stop there. He says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” if you expect Him to answer prayer.

The question is why should anyone want to get away from God? You can’t. No matter where you go, He’s there. “Whither shall I go from thy spirit?” Now this is verse 7 of Psalm 139. "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in sheol, behold, thou art there." Friends, you can’t get away from Him. “If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost part of the sea.” You won’t get away from God. You could go to the moon—you don’t get away Him. Do you think we ought to confess our sins in detail unto God? Of course, spell them out. He already knows about it anyway And let Him know that you know it, too, and that you recognize it as sin.”

“Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.” Now somebody asked the question, “How can God do that?” Well, I don’t know. Because the psalmist here said he didn’t know. “Such knowledge is too wonderful” for us, but it doesn’t keep God from knowing everything. And, actually, the omniscience of God is not an occasion for terror, but actually for comfort. You know, He saved me and yet He knew me. That’s the amazing thing about it. God knows us, and yet He’ll save us. How wonderful He is.

“For Jehovah is high and regardeth the humble, but the proud he knoweth afar off.” Jehovah is high. He is overall. Yet He’ll "condescend to the lowly, and he regardeth the humble." What a wonderful picture this is, and there’s so much said in the Word of God about the fact that God regards the humble. James, that practical writer, in James 4:6 said, “God resisteth the proud, but he giveth grace unto the humble.” And we’re told in Scripture: “Humble yourselves therefore under the awful hand of God.” This is something, as you can see, that God takes note of and something that God recognizes.

“O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth forever.” Now this is a psalm that exalts the mercy of God. God is rich in mercy, Paul said. I want mercy from God, and God is rich in it. Have you called on Him? There are folks that have hang-ups. We get letters, “I have done this sin. Do you think God will forgive me?” Friends, He’s rich in mercy. Do you want forgiveness? Do you really want it, well, He’ll give it to you.  Oh, my friend, learn to fall down before Him and worship Him. He’s worthy.

He’s everything you need. I wish I could get that over to you. He’s been made to us wisdom and He’s our righteousness, He's our sanctification and our redemption. And whatever you need, you find it in Him today. What are you boasting of today? Are you boasting of your degrees? Your wisdom? Are you boasting today of your wealth? Your power? Are you boasting of your position? Your character? My friend, you have nothing to boast of. And believe me, I know I haven’t. But we can boast of Christ. And He’s everything. He’s everything that we need today. Oh, that you and I might see that.

“Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places. He causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.” It’s God that makes the weather. The weatherman doesn’t make the weather. Not only did He create it, not only does He make the weather, but friends, He’s running this universe as it pleases Him. God doesn’t have to answer you or me today. He asks us to trust Him, and it should be a life of faith.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
