Thy will be done

March 1, 2024

Anything that is contrary to the will and character of God is sin. And I don’t care what it is. It could be even going to church. I think some people, just to please God, go into church. And imagine a little man down here says to God, “I won’t do it. I’m going to do it my way.” And that’s what little man is saying today. “We want liberty; we want freedom. We’re going to do it our way.” My friend, you’re not going to do it your way, because God’s will will finally prevail. The prayer should be for all of God’s people—"Thy will may be done on earth as it is in heaven.” God’s will is going to ultimately prevail. Now anything contrary to His will is sin, and it doesn’t make any difference what that is.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will rest you.” That’s His invitation today. He says to those that have got strife in their hearts, have got guilt in their hearts, that you can come and He removes it all. He tonight has made peace by the blood of His cross for any sinner that will trust Him. And that’s the peace that He’s offering to this world. Do you know what it is? Have you trusted Him? Have you actually experienced what it is to come to the Lord Jesus?

You’re going to know Him when you see Him by the nails that were in His hands. He will wear scars throughout eternity that He might present you without blemish. He loves you. He loves you. It’s tragic when we don’t love Him. God has a remedy for every sin but that one, because that’s the remedy. You’re turning your back on love when you turn your back on Jesus Christ. And He loves you, and you can’t keep Him from loving you. He loves you. That’s the reason He died 1900 years ago—to save you. Have you ever, ever accepted Him? Received Him? Do you know today He’s your Savior?

“Sing unto the Lord; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.” God’s done great things. In creation, you’ll notice of the six days of renovation, it’s quite interesting. Every day when it’s come to an end, the Lord looked upon it and saw it was good. Now when God looks upon a thing and sees it’s good, it’s good. And even today in the earth that’s been cursed by sin, my, it’s still beautiful. Think what it’ll be when the curse is going to be removed. So, we’ll have an occasion to sing praises to Him in that day and we do today.

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.” Now salvation here, you’ll notice, is not a thing. It’s a person. Salvation is not a program, it is not a religion, it’s not a system, it’s not a ritual, it’s not a liturgy. Salvation is a person. And that person is the Lord Jehovah—the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s the picture that we have here, and they’re praising Him for that.

We think prayer is a little gimmick whereby we turn a faucet, and we get out of it anything we want. Or it’s a hocus pocus that we give in a mystical way over our problems, and they disappear. That’s not prayer in the New Testament sense. Prayer is when you and I go to God as we go to a heavenly Father, and we just tell Him everything. And then He takes over. He takes over. And we take hands off, and then He begins to move—not necessarily in the things outside, but in our own hearts and in our own lives.

May I be bold enough to say to you today: You don’t have any unanswered prayers. If you’re God’s child, you don’t have an unanswered prayer. We hear today that. What an insult it is to God for a Christian to go around and say, “Well, you know, I have unanswered prayer.” Do you mean to tell me that your heavenly Father doesn’t listen to you? Do you mean to tell me that He doesn’t answer prayer? Paul says that He does answer prayer. And that when you take your petitions to Him, your requests, you’re to thank Him because He’s going to hear and answer.

Worry about nothing, pray about everything. And the little things of our lives are to be made a matter of prayer. I personally do not think there’s anything in a Christian’s life that should not be made a matter of prayer to God. To begin with, He knows us. And I know that from experience, and I’m sure you do. I’ve prayed to God, and I prayed around a certain thing as if He didn’t know about it. May I say to you, you don’t pray around with God. You tell Him. You can talk to Him very frankly. You can open and unburden your heart to Him as you can unburden your heart to no one else.

“When they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: shall not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?” God’s forbids His people to dabble in this satanic system. When a people turn from God, they generally go after the occult and abnormal. And then even Christians dabble in this. Many of them talk about their group that are casting out demons. My friend, I’m not in that business. I’m preaching the gospel of the grace of God and the Word of God, and that will take care of all the demons.

“Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.” And that is something that I believe today that God’s people need to do. There is this light thinking about God; a lack of reverence for Him. A lack of reverence for the Word of God—actually, ridiculing sometimes things that are sacred; making light of things that should not be made light of. And you and I need to sanctify the Lord God in our hearts.

My experience has been the folk today that are unbelievers that I’ve dealt with. I had a young fellow say to me, “Oh,” he said, “I want to believe. I’m searching for the truth.” Was he searching for the truth? Living with a girl in adultery? You know the problem is that no man’s eyes are closed today. There’s no veil there except you put it there. And if you really want to know, you give up your sin, and you want to turn to Christ, He’ll make it real to you. The problem today is a great many really don’t mean business with God at all.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
