There is joy ahead

April 12, 2024

One of the things you’ll note about present-day Jerusalem, you do not find a joyful song anywhere. And that’s true of the churches that are there. I listened. I never heard a joyful song. But the way you’re going to know when we get to the Millennium is everybody’s going to have fun. “Break forth into joy….” There’s going to be joy. God doesn’t care today, I think, for all of us saints walking around with long faces, complaining and criticizing. He wants us to have joy. John says, “I’m writing these things to you that your joy might be full.” Not just have a little fun, but have fun all the time.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

God says, “I’ll take that cup of judgment away from you. And now, I’m going to bless you.” How can you say that God is through with the nation Israel? Why, even poetic justice demands that after all of these years of judgment upon this land, this city, and this people—that God will bless them, and that God will get the victory. And if you don’t see it, oh my friend, will you listen to Him again. “Awake, awake. Wake out of sleep, because knowing the time, it’s high time to wake out of sleep.” And say, there are a lot of Christians today should wake up and get up and get going for God.

I can’t think of a better hang up than right here on this matter of the Word of God. My friend, the greatest sin in the church today is not this or that. The greatest sin is the ignorance of the Word of God and the lack of study of the Word of God. It’s nonsense today to say, “Oh, I believe the Bible from cover to cover. I believe it is God’s Word. I’ll defend it with my life,” and then never study it. My friend, if God has spoken between the pages of Genesis 1:1 and Revelation 22, then somewhere between there He’s got a word for us. And if it’s God speaking, we ought to listen to Him.

Man’s history is a history of warfare and constant conflict going on. And you will find that this is true today, not only among nations. It’s true among cities, you find it in the business world, you find it in the social world, and you find it today in the religious world. There is this conflict that is going on. And I think that you’ll find it in practically every neighborhood, and you’ll find it in many homes. “No peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” Now if you can make peace in the human heart apart from God, as a wicked man, then you will contradict the Word of God. So far no one has been able to do it.

God says, “I carry you.” And I close on that note because there’s a lot of modern idolatry today. And, face up to it—do you get anything when you go to church? Do you get anything when you listen to this radio program? Well, if you don’t, I wouldn’t listen. May I say to you, God wants to communicate something to you. He has something for you. He wants to carry you. And He doesn’t want you to carry Him. May I say there are a lot of people today, they have a god that they have to carry around with them. And actually, churchgoing is a real burden to them. May I say to you, this is the test.

I’d like to ask you the question: Does your religion carry you or do you carry your religion? That’s important. God says, “I carry your sins.” “He hath born our griefs and carried our sorrows.” And He also carries our care, our burdens. “Casting all your care upon him for He careth for you.” And then, God carries us today. “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms; and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee, and shall say, ‘Destroy them.’” God says, “I’m carrying you.” And today, He says that to you and me.

I think there are going to be two things that are going to be a surprise to all of us when we get to heaven someday. The first thing that’s going to surprise us will be the people that got there that you and I didn’t believe would make it. The second thing that’s going to surprise us is going to be that some of the folk that we thought were going to be there, and they won’t be there. I think we’re in for two big surprises when we get to heaven. I just hope you and I are there, and we will be there on one condition—whether Christ is our Savior today.

Quite interesting, you know, how you can spend your life down here. And you may have your Ph.D. degree and still you don’t know anything. Don’t know anything about the origin of this universe, or you don’t know where it’s going. Now, no idol can tell you that, and no Ph.D. Degree can give you that answer; no college today can give that to you. It’s well to turn to the One who does have the answer. And it doesn’t mean He’ll give you the answer, but it’s nice to know Him who knows the answer. Now there are so many things that I don’t know. But I want to say this to you, I know the One who does know.

You may think you’re something, but you’re a nobody. We’re a nobody. It’s only God that can make us a somebody. Little man frets down here and “struts across the stage of life,” as Shakespeare put it. And he huffs and puffs like the old wolf around the little pig’s house. Huffing and puffing, that’s man today. And where is he going and what is he getting out of it? And some of them see the futility of it all and take their own lives. Well, where else are they going to turn, friend? The only place you can turn today is God, and what men are missing today. The fellowship. The salvation. His goodness. His grace. All these are yours if you but turn to Him.

As you trusted Christ, the Holy Spirit did several wonderful things for you, and one of those things was He regenerated you. He made you a child of God. He also indwells you. Then you’re baptized by the Holy Spirit, put in the body of believers, the church. You’ve been put in as a member of that body, and you’re in Christ. Paul says “in Him,” that is, in Christ, “dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, and ye are complete in Him.” How wonderful this is. So that, when you come to Christ, you get everything.

The preacher he got up and he said, “Brethren,” he says, “this church, it needs to walk.” And one of the deacons said, “Amen.” He says, “Brethren, this church needs to run.” And this deacon says, “Hallelujah.” And then he says, “Brethren, this church needs to fly.” And this deacon he said, “Amen and hallelujah.” And then the minister said, “But it’s going to cost money to make this church fly.” And then this deacon says, “Let her walk, brother, let her walk.” And today, if you’re going to walk with God through this earth, it’ll probably cost you something. But He’ll furnish your strength. You need strength to walk? He’ll give it to you. If you need strength to fly, He’s got that for you also.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
