The Word will take care of demons

February 20, 2024

“When they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: shall not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?” God’s forbids His people to dabble in this satanic system. When a people turn from God, they generally go after the occult and abnormal. And then even Christians dabble in this. Many of them talk about their group that are casting out demons. My friend, I’m not in that business. I’m preaching the gospel of the grace of God and the Word of God, and that will take care of all the demons.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

“Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.” And that is something that I believe today that God’s people need to do. There is this light thinking about God; a lack of reverence for Him. A lack of reverence for the Word of God—actually, ridiculing sometimes things that are sacred; making light of things that should not be made light of. And you and I need to sanctify the Lord God in our hearts.

My experience has been the folk today that are unbelievers that I’ve dealt with. I had a young fellow say to me, “Oh,” he said, “I want to believe. I’m searching for the truth.” Was he searching for the truth? Living with a girl in adultery? You know the problem is that no man’s eyes are closed today. There’s no veil there except you put it there. And if you really want to know, you give up your sin, and you want to turn to Christ, He’ll make it real to you. The problem today is a great many really don’t mean business with God at all.

You see even our salvation today, we don’t bring a little lamb. We look back in faith to a historical fact, the coming into the world of the Son of God. It rests upon His death, His burial, and His resurrection. Those are historical facts. God never asked you to take a leap in the dark. He’s just asked you to believe and trust something that rests upon a firm foundation. And it is a firm foundation. And it’s the only foundation. “No other foundation can any man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

My friend, you’re not going to rush into the presence of God. You can’t rush into His presence. He just doesn’t permit that. If you come to the Father through Christ, that’s the only way He can be approached today. And you never get in there because of who you are—you get in there because you’re in Christ. “No man cometh to the Father, but by Me.” The Lord Jesus made that very clear. And if we’re His child, we can come with boldness, but we come to a throne of grace. If you attempt to come to God today on any other basis than the grace of God that’s been extended to you in Christ, friend you won’t make it. He just doesn’t let you in on any other basis.

I’d like to say that the church needs another vision of God. Not just of His love, but the fact that our God is a holy God, a righteous God, and He moves in judgment. And you know, He never asked me to apologize for Him. I don’t intend to apologize for Him. Take it or leave it. You can shut your eyes, put your head down in the sand like an ostrich is supposed to do, but every ostrich has got more sense than that. But, my friend, you can’t destroy what the Word of God says. God will punish sin. He says He will. But He loves you, friend. He’ll save you. But you know, you’ll have to come His way. And Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father, but by Me.”

Now God today will not compromise with evil. And I thank Him for that—that He won’t compromise with evil in your life or my life. Because it’s evil and sin that has brought all the sorrow in this world. It’s the thing that puts the grey in the hair, the totter in the step, the stoop in the shoulder. And it is the thing today that breaks up homes. It breaks up lives. It fills our graves. I’m glad God won’t compromise with it. God says He hates sin and He intends to destroy it. He intends to remove it from His universe. And today our God is moving forth uncompromisingly, unhesitatingly, undeviatingly against sin, and He doesn’t intend to accept the white flag of surrender from it. He intends to drive it from his universe.

All you and I have to do is to look at our own lives and, when we do, we recognize that whatever’s come to us, God is righteous and just. Now if you don’t think so, you feel like, as I have felt many times, that God was being a little unfair to me and unjust. Then I became, well, I felt sorry for myself. I developed a complex of some sort that He was persecuting me. Sort of a spiritual paranoia. Many of us are like that. But, friends, I’ve come far enough in life, and I look back on those days when it was so dark and bleak, and I’m of the opinion that God permitted it because He was accomplishing a purpose in my life. And I praise Him today for it.

Very candidly, friend, when you look at your own life and that, are you ready to complain against God today? I know how I whined and howled when I got cancer. I felt like the Lord just was being unfair. Then I had the opportunity of lying alone on that hospital bed and looking at my own life. Friends, God wasn’t wrong. I was. I tell you—you and I need to face up to it. This idea today that we’re something special. God’s not going to do anything that’s unjust. He’s not going to do anything that’s wrong. You and I are wrong. God is not wrong.”

God’s people must be prepared to enter the kingdom. That brings up a very pertinent question, does it not, for you and me today. Are you fit today for heaven? Right now, suppose God took you to heaven as you are right now, would you be fit for heaven? I can’t answer it for you, but there’s going to have to be a great deal of repair work done on Vernon McGee to make him ready for heaven. And that is what life is all about. It’s just a school, preparing you for eternity. And the question is, it’s something for you to think about. Maybe in your odd moments, or when you’re lying on your bed at night, are you fit for heaven?

His message is, “Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nose: for wherein he is to be accounted of?” Don’t put your confidence in man. Did you know you and I exhale, but we don’t know whether we’re going to inhale the next breath? That’s all man is today, just a little breath. He misses one breath, and he’s through. He’s out of the picture. And multitudes today—heart trouble hits them just in a moment, and they disappear from the earth’s scene. Don’t put your confidence in man. Put your confidence in Jesus Christ today.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
