Sit down

May 17, 2023

And my frustrated, confused friend today, are you at that corner of life where you don’t know which way to turn? Then, for goodness sake, sit down. Sit at Jesus’ feet. And a great many folk are taking time out every day to sit at His feet as we look at His Word. And it’ll help you with your housework. It will make you a better dishwasher. You’ll sweep the floors cleaner. And you can dig a ditch better, and you can mow the lawn better. And you can study your lesson better, and you can work at the office better, and you can drive your car better. You can do everything better if you’ll just take a little time, friend, to sit at Jesus’ feet.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Now there is a very practical application for us today. Any person you can help is your neighbor. It doesn’t mean the man lives next door to you, because generally he’s as well off as you are. And the chances are that you need his help. But any person you can help is your neighbor, and anyone who needs Christ today—for He is the Good Samaritan—and needs the gospel. We have a great deal of talk today about getting the gospel out, but we don’t make much of an effort.

Paul says in Galatians 2:16, “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, for by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” You just can’t measure up to it, friends, that’s all. It’d be impossible for you to keep the Law. “For what the law could not do.” That’s the reason God sent the Holy Spirit, to enable you to live. You just can’t take the Law, bare knuckled, and keep it.

God's men are always chosen. You remember He said in the Gospel of John, "You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you." I was a teller in a bank when the Lord called me. I didn’t have any idea of ever being a preacher. I always actually looked down on preachers. I never thought much of them. And He called me. And I’ve always felt good about it because if He called me, He’s responsible. I didn’t call Him; He called me. That’s wonderful. He says, “You have not chosen Me,  I have chosen you.” I love that. They tell me election is something fearful. It’s a great comfort if you understand what it really means.

Why did the Lord Jesus call publicans and sinners and eat with them? He came to minister to them. The gospel is really for those who recognize their need. There are some people today that are too good to be saved. Did you know that? That is, they think they are. I want to speak very frankly. If you recognize that you have a need, then the gospel’s for you. Christ can save you, and He will save you. And if you’re self-sufficient, you recognize no need, may I say to you just go on your self-chosen pathway. It’ll lead you to destruction; the message is not for you. I’m very sorry. I wish I had a message for you, but I don’t have a message for folks like that.

Then we have the story here of the paralytic in Capernaum that was healed. And this is when they let this man down through the roof. A lot of people today, friends, are not going to get the message unless—you’re just going to have to get at the corner of a stretcher, because these people are paralyzed today. Paralyzed by sin, paralyzed by so many other things that this world holds for them. Some of them are paralyzed by prejudice, and some are paralyzed by indifference. And they’re never going to hear Jesus say to them, “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee” unless you get at the corner of a stretcher and bring them.

We have here the healing of the leper. But you notice how He did it? He put forth His hand and touched him. Nobody had touched that poor fellow for years. Can you imagine what it meant to have the touch of this hand upon him? May I say to you, and I say it very literally, has the Lord Jesus touched your life? There are so many lives today that need to be touched. And maybe it will have to be your hand, by the way. It’ll have to be something you do. And I’m confident all of you can reach somebody. We need to reach out our hand and touch some soul that only you could touch. No one else could touch them.

Did you know Satan is a fisherman? Satan’s a fisherman, also. He’s got his hook out there in the water today. And God’s fishing for your soul, and Satan’s fishing for your soul. And Satan has his hook baited; he has the things of the world on it. And God has His hook out, too, and that hook is a cross. And on it, the Son of God died for you. That’s the message He has for you. By the way, who caught you? Whose hook are you on today? You’re on one or the other. Either the devil has you or God has you. There’s no third fisherman out there, by the way.

Why was Jesus tested? To demonstrate that I have a sinless Savior, that He’s impeccable, that He’s able to save, and that all power is given to Him. And there’s a Man in the glory today, friends, who is there for you and me. And He sympathizes with us, and He understands us today. And it’s wonderful to have a Savior like that. “My little children, these things write unto you, that ye sin not. But if any man sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.” It’s wonderful to have a Savior up there today who is a Savior, friends, and one you can depend upon. How wonderful He is.

Perhaps someone’s listening today, you’ve heard the love of God and you haven’t been moved by it. And you’ve wondered why. May I say to you, you need to hear the voice crying in the wilderness, “Repent.” Repentance is in saving faith. We preach the grace of God. But I want to say this to you. If you have been the recipient of the grace of God and if you turn to God, you’re going to have to turn from your sin. And if you don’t turn from your sin, you haven’t turned to God. Repentance is there, my friends, but the message is “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved.”

"For with God nothing shall be impossible." Now I want to emphasize that, because there are a group of people who’ve taken that today, twisted it, and distorted it out of all proportion in the way in which it is given. There’s nothing impossible with God when He says He’s going to do it. But it’s not necessarily so when you and I say it. A man said to me the other day, “The Lord told me to do this.” I think a lot of people use that cliché today to cover up the fact they want their own selfish desire. Nothing’s impossible with God, but there sure is a whole lot that’s impossible with you and with me.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
