Reach out to someone

May 9, 2023

We have here the healing of the leper. But you notice how He did it? He put forth His hand and touched him. Nobody had touched that poor fellow for years. Can you imagine what it meant to have the touch of this hand upon him? May I say to you, and I say it very literally, has the Lord Jesus touched your life? There are so many lives today that need to be touched. And maybe it will have to be your hand, by the way. It’ll have to be something you do. And I’m confident all of you can reach somebody. We need to reach out our hand and touch some soul that only you could touch. No one else could touch them.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Did you know Satan is a fisherman? Satan’s a fisherman, also. He’s got his hook out there in the water today. And God’s fishing for your soul, and Satan’s fishing for your soul. And Satan has his hook baited; he has the things of the world on it. And God has His hook out, too, and that hook is a cross. And on it, the Son of God died for you. That’s the message He has for you. By the way, who caught you? Whose hook are you on today? You’re on one or the other. Either the devil has you or God has you. There’s no third fisherman out there, by the way.

Why was Jesus tested? To demonstrate that I have a sinless Savior, that He’s impeccable, that He’s able to save, and that all power is given to Him. And there’s a Man in the glory today, friends, who is there for you and me. And He sympathizes with us, and He understands us today. And it’s wonderful to have a Savior like that. “My little children, these things write unto you, that ye sin not. But if any man sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.” It’s wonderful to have a Savior up there today who is a Savior, friends, and one you can depend upon. How wonderful He is.

Perhaps someone’s listening today, you’ve heard the love of God and you haven’t been moved by it. And you’ve wondered why. May I say to you, you need to hear the voice crying in the wilderness, “Repent.” Repentance is in saving faith. We preach the grace of God. But I want to say this to you. If you have been the recipient of the grace of God and if you turn to God, you’re going to have to turn from your sin. And if you don’t turn from your sin, you haven’t turned to God. Repentance is there, my friends, but the message is “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved.”

"For with God nothing shall be impossible." Now I want to emphasize that, because there are a group of people who’ve taken that today, twisted it, and distorted it out of all proportion in the way in which it is given. There’s nothing impossible with God when He says He’s going to do it. But it’s not necessarily so when you and I say it. A man said to me the other day, “The Lord told me to do this.” I think a lot of people use that cliché today to cover up the fact they want their own selfish desire. Nothing’s impossible with God, but there sure is a whole lot that’s impossible with you and with me.

Now, there are several things I’d like to say. One is that the tendency among us Protestants is to play down the role of Mary. But remember she was “highly favored.” But also, with the same breath, let me say that she was “blessed art thou” not above women, but “among women.” She is not lifted up above women; she lifted womanhood up. That is the role that she played, because, you see, it’s so easy to say that a woman brought sin into the world, but also—let’s also say that a man did not bring the Savior into the world, but a woman did.

Do you know today that you’re a child of God through faith in Christ? Do you know this is the Word of God? I feel sorry for the Christian today that has to wobble back and forth and say, “Well, I do not know. I’m not sure. I don’t guess I have enough faith.” No, that’s not your problem. Your problem is you don’t know enough. I hate to say that, but that’s our problem—if we knew enough. You see, “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” If you really knew the Word of God, you'd believe it. The problem is with those who are ignorant of the Word of God. Oh, if we only knew the book and only knew the Lord, we’d believe Him.

“Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.” Now when He comes again, He’s coming in judgment, and there’s nothing wrong with this. The whole tenor of Scripture, including the New Testament, is that He’s coming in judgment. And we have no more vivid and dramatic picture than you have in the nineteenth chapter of the book of Revelation when John said he saw a door open in heaven and One on a white horse coming forth. He’s coming forth conquering and to conquer, my friend. Now that is the picture that the Word of God presents. Maybe you don’t like it, but it’s in the Word of God.

And how this man Nehemiah was raised up of God to encourage God’s people. You see, he just didn’t stay down yonder and pray. He did something about it. Fact of the matter is, you’ll find that he’ll encourage the people to pray and work at the same time. And how we need that today, my beloved. We need prayer, real prayer. Prayer that comes from a burdened heart. And then, my beloved, a prayer that will lead out into action, demonstrating by the life today that we have submitted to our own prayers, that we mean business with God. God hears and answers prayer like that.

Now we come to another marvelous prayer of David in Psalm 143 here. And here you have an urgent appeal of this man for help. And this is a very wonderful—oh, this is a marvelous psalm, and you see David again, no inhibitions; just opens up his heart to God. “Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.” It’s a great prayer, and it’s one that can fit into your experience and my experience today. And it’s a prayer that we can rest upon the faithfulness of God and the righteousness of God to forgive our sin.

“I poured out my complaint before him; I showed before him my trouble.” And this is Psalm 142:2 that I’ve just read. In other words, he laid before God everything that was in his heart and in his life. And I think that’s the way that we should pray today. This idea today we’re to pray around something or we’re to rationalize in our prayer or we are to pray all the way around Robin’s barn, I think we ought to just come right down to it and get right down to the nitty gritty and tell God everything in our lives. You can tell Him about your temptations. You can tell Him about everything.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
