Dr. J. Vernon McGee

My Father's a King

May 29, 2023

God is faithful, oh, He’s faithful. "By whom you were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord." Oh, I want to enjoy. Life and death. Oh, death is ours. But we have One that got the victory over death. And isn't this wonderful? "Things present"—that's things of time. "Things to come"—out yonder in the future. All things are yours. "We are more than conquerors through Him that loved us." May I say to you, up yonder in glory today is a living Christ. I hope you have Christ. He’s yours, and He’s mine. And the world's. In eternity. My Father’s a King, my friend.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

These are great days to live for God. He’s asked me to live for Him, asked me to get the Word out, and I’m trying to do that. And with your help and by His grace, we're going to do it. And He says, "Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things." How are you going to be worthy? I can’t be worthy. The only thing that will make me worthy is Christ. And, therefore, if I trust Him, and I’ve committed my way to Him, and I’m looking for the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that’s the way I’m going to go out with the Rapture is by the grace of God.

"Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares." Don’t let down your guard today, friends. Don’t give up. These are great days to live for God. That’s what we’re called to do. I’m not called upon to reform the world or change the world. That’s God’s business. That’s not my business. He’s asked me to live for Him, asked me to get the Word out, and I’m trying to do that. But the thing is this is very comfortable to know that you’re in the will of God. That’s the important thing.

"When these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh." Are these things beginning to come to pass? I’m not in a position to know. I have no inside information. There’s some men today that seem to have all this information, but I don’t have it. And all I can say is that my salvation and my redemption is nearer than when I first believed. And I know He’s coming. That’s the thing that’s all important to me. He’s going to take His church out of the world.

He said, "Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them." It’s been true ever since He was here. There were false Messiahs in His day. There are those that today claim supernatural power. They actually are moving into the place of Christ. They draw attention to themselves rather than to the Lord. Now, they talk a great deal about Jesus today. I know you hear all of that, and it’s saccharine sweet, but actually it does not glorify Him one wit because it’s taking away the glory from Him.

You know, you can become so religious and callous that you can exclude Jesus from your life. You may be an expert in argument and resting on the haunches of your smug complacency, but the question is: Have you ever let Christ into your heart? And there’s no substitute for that. Are you filled with doubts? Puzzles? Trouble? Are you bent double today with the burdens of life? Then come to Jesus. Come with your burdens; come with your sin. Come anytime. It doesn’t make any difference; you can come to Him. What a wonderful lesson there is here.

Because you are a Christian, you have no inoculation that you won’t have trouble. That’s a viewpoint a great many get today, that a Christian is one that’s going to miss all of the trouble down here. My friend, you’ll miss the Great Tribulation, but the way I like to put it, you won’t miss the little tribulation. You're going to have a little of it right down here. And then, there’s something else here. When you see trouble coming to someone else and not to you, don’t get the idea that probably you’re superior to that individual. But the lesson for you is that maybe God has permitted you to see this trouble in order that it might bring you to God.

My friend, do you think God is asleep? Do you feel like that He’s gone to bed when you pray and you can’t get Him up? Do you feel like He doesn’t want to answer your prayer? My friend, God wants to answer your prayer. And God will answer your prayer. It’s a wonderful thing, by the way. You do not have to storm the gates of heaven. You do not have to knock the door of heaven down. God’s not reluctant to hear you, friend. He wants to answer your prayer. He says, “Before they call, I will answer them.” God wants to hear and answer your prayer.

And my frustrated, confused friend today, are you at that corner of life where you don’t know which way to turn? Then, for goodness sake, sit down. Sit at Jesus’ feet. And a great many folk are taking time out every day to sit at His feet as we look at His Word. And it’ll help you with your housework. It will make you a better dishwasher. You’ll sweep the floors cleaner. And you can dig a ditch better, and you can mow the lawn better. And you can study your lesson better, and you can work at the office better, and you can drive your car better. You can do everything better if you’ll just take a little time, friend, to sit at Jesus’ feet.

Now there is a very practical application for us today. Any person you can help is your neighbor. It doesn’t mean the man lives next door to you, because generally he’s as well off as you are. And the chances are that you need his help. But any person you can help is your neighbor, and anyone who needs Christ today—for He is the Good Samaritan—and needs the gospel. We have a great deal of talk today about getting the gospel out, but we don’t make much of an effort.

Paul says in Galatians 2:16, “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, for by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” You just can’t measure up to it, friends, that’s all. It’d be impossible for you to keep the Law. “For what the law could not do.” That’s the reason God sent the Holy Spirit, to enable you to live. You just can’t take the Law, bare knuckled, and keep it.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
