Free From the Fear of Death

Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Hebrews 2:14-15

Who used to have the power of death? The devil had power over death, but Jesus defeated Satan on the Cross so that we no longer have to fear death. Satan’s grip on the souls of men and women has been lost. The minute a Christian takes their last breath, they are in the presence of God.

Again, what does the Apostle Paul mean by these verses in the book of Hebrews? He was teaching about the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Through His shed blood on the Cross, He has delivered us from spiritual death, also known as the second death. According to Revelation 20:11-14, the second death will occur on the day of the white throne judgment. All sinners who have rejected God’s love and mercy through Jesus Christ will stand before Him to be judged:

Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

This dreadful Day of Judgment and the second death do not need to be your end! Satan’s time is short, and he is trying to blind people from the knowledge of truth so that they die in their sin and perish for all eternity. God has made a way of escape! If you repent of your sin and accept Christ as your Savior, your name will be written in the Book of Life. You will be saved!

The fact that man can be made right with God and escape judgment is the best news the world could ever hear.
