My Redeemer Lives

...when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high....
Hebrews 1:3

In the middle of revealing Jesus’ greatness, the Holy Spirit inspired the writer of the book of Hebrews to include that Jesus is our Redeemer: He had by Himself purged our sins. There was no one else who could redeem us. Jesus was a sinless sacrifice who would suffice. He became the “Lamb of God” who took away the sins of the world (John 1:29).

Jesus came down from eternity to become a Man. He was 100% Man and 100% God. For 3½ years, He preached to sinners, taught the people, and healed them. As the time came closer for Jesus to go to the Cross, He willingly submitted Himself to the Father's will. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He earnestly prayed. Jesus was betrayed by Judas, arrested, and unlawfully interrogated as He stood before the court of the Sanhedrin all night.

After a grueling night, the Pharisees handed Jesus over to the Romans. They scourged Him, spat on Him, pulled out His beard, and put a crown of thorns on His head. Jesus began to carry His Cross, but weakened by all He went through, Simon the Cyrene was called upon to help Him carry the Cross to a hill called Calvary. There Roman soldiers placed nails in Jesus’ hands and feet.

In agony, Jesus cried out to the Father, “It is finished!” and Jesus dismissed His spirit (John 19:30). Due to the Passover celebrations, Roman soldiers came to break His legs, but Jesus had already died. Psalm 34:20 tells us: He guards all his bones; not one of them is broken. A spear pierced His side. What happened? Water and blood came forth, and some say, Jesus died of a broken heart. He loved us that much (John 19:34).

On the third day, Jesus resurrected. He showed Himself to His Disciples and remained among them for 40 days (Acts 1:3). Then He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father (Romans 8:34). Our Redeemer lives!

Only by being both deity and humanity could Jesus Christ bridge the gap between where God is.
