Unskilled in God’s Word

For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:13-14

Paul established what a young Christian was like compared to a mature Christian. He wanted them to see there needed to be a progression from immaturity to maturity. The Jews he addressed were not developing; they had stayed infants in Christ. They had not grown in their understanding of the Scriptures or in their comprehension of the Person of Christ.

Today, there are so many believers who have not grown in their faith. They have not read through the Bible, once. There are people who have known Christ since the 1960s and 1970s, but they have remained babes. There are four main essentials in growing in Christ: Reading God’s Word, praying, fellowshipping, and witnessing––sharing your faith. We are also to abide in Christ (John 15). Christians need to study and know the major doctrines of the Bible. There is a book I have written to help Christians mature: Doctrines: A Simple Road Map of Biblical Truth. It will help you to grow.

A Christian needs to grow and understand the Person of Christ, as seen in the four Gospels. For instance, did you know that the Gospel of Matthew was written to the Jews and proclaimed Christ to be the Son of David? The Gospel of Mark was written to the Romans and revealed that Jesus is the Son of Man. The Gospel of Luke was written to the Greeks, and the writer teaches that Christ is the Son of Adam. The Gospel of John clearly manifests Christ as the Son of God––Deity.

As a Christian develops, they are to learn about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which are listed in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Romans 12:6-8, and Ephesians 4:11-12. It is important they know God’s will for their lives (Romans 12:1-2). Those who grow and mature will understand Christian doctrine. Their hearts will be guarded from false teachings, and they will have good discernment.

When believers aren’t growing, it’s almost always symptomatic of a failure to be in God’s Word.
