Entering Into Rest

Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience....
Hebrews 4:6

What is the way that has become open for people to enter into rest? This is not speaking of physical rest, but spiritual rest. Christ alone is the way we can enter rest. Jesus told His Disciple in John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Can a person enter into God’s rest through someone else other than Christ? No. Nor can a person enter heaven on their own merit or their good works. Placing their faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to receive salvation.

The writer of Hebrews mentioned that the message of salvation was first preached to those who were disobedient. Who were the disobedient people Paul spoke of? Israel. What God required of them was obedience and faith. What was said of Abraham in the Old Testament when he believed God’s promise that his descendants would be as the stars––innumerable? Genesis 15:6 records: And he [Abraham] believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness. Abraham’s righteousness is also recorded in the New Testament in Romans 4:3, 22. Abraham knew that through his lineage, the Messiah would come.

Jesus spoke of Abraham’s faith to the Jews who questioned Him:

“Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:56-58).

So you see, both in the Old Testament and the New Testament, faith in Christ was necessary for salvation. Have you placed your faith in Jesus? Will you fully trust and obey Him? Then you will rejoice and enter into His rest––your redemption.

The only hope for all sinners is salvation by grace through faith in Christ. Apart from that, mankind remains “dead in [his] trespasses and sins”...by God’s grace He continues to redeem sinners, drawing them to Himself in repentance and faith.
