A Duty to Provide

But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
1 Timothy 5:8

This is a very important Scripture. In context, it is in reference to supplying for the needs of widows within your family. It is a Scripture not to be taken lightly; it is to be taken seriously. Paul was completely unyielding in his statement. This means, as a son or daughter, it is your duty to take care of your mother and father when they reach an elderly age.

We who are young have a great responsibility for the elderly. If your father dies and your mother becomes a widow, and you fail to take care of her, Paul declared to men, you have denied the faith and are worse than an unbeliever––bottom line.

Husbands, as the head of your home, it is also needful for you to, not only support the elderly, but to do whatever is necessary to support your family, even if it means working two jobs. I believe it is best for mothers to stay at home and take care of the children. However, in today’s economy, it can be very difficult for the family to rely on one income. Some women have to work to help with the finances.

However, the Bible is clear. The husband’s duty is to provide the basic needs for his family. I cannot say it enough. Husbands, seek God’s direction, and He will open opportunities for provision. May God bless and prosper you as you diligently work and seek the welfare of your family.

If homes are going to survive, it will be because husbands and fathers again place their families at the highest level on their system of priorities.
