An Overthrown Faith
But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.
2 Timothy 2:16-18
Christians should not become involved in ungodly chatter just for the sake of arguing with people. What is the reason given to help us to shun profane and idle babblings? The reason is in the result––ungodliness.
Paul warned that if this behavior was allowed to continue and not stopped, it would spread like cancer. What does cancer do? It can spread through the human body until it kills a person. Cancer in the body of Christ is no different, it kills people’s faith––their faith is overthrown––sad.
At this time, the resurrection had come into question. Paul taught the Gospel, the resurrection is key to the message:
...if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep [died] in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive (1 Corinthians 15:14-22).
Beware of people who come up to you in conversation and start arguments. They spread falsehood, plantings seeds of doubt in your heart and mind about what the Bible teaches. Do not let them snatch away your joy and assurance in the truth the Bible teaches. The Resurrection of believers has not past. We do not have an empty faith––we have a full assurance of faith.
Knowing the truth is one of our best defenses against Satan’s attacks.
