Remember Me
Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.
Hebrews 13:3
Understanding persecution and imprisonment all too well, Paul encouraged the Hebrew believers not to forget those suffering in prisons, as if chained with them. When imprisoned himself, at times, he felt forgotten, isolated, abandoned and alone. He wrote to Timothy: Only Luke is with me (2 Timothy 4:11). So we see that Paul had a heart for those imprisoned and mistreated.
In America, Christians, for the most part, live comfortable lives without worry of persecution. But persecution does happen. Charlie Kirk was an outspoken Christian who loved to debate about all different issues pertaining to life. He did an incredible work among the youth in colleges all across America. He was the Founder and President of Turning Point USA. Charlie’s life was violently take––he became a modern-day martyr.
As Christians, we need to remember people from all over the world who are wasting away in prisons in horrible conditions. Believers are mistreated in Siberia, China, South America, Central America, India, Africa, North Korea, Iran and Afghanistan. As the radical Muslim population is exploding in Europe, persecution of Christians is on the rise. May God prompt our hearts to remember them in prayer.
In Acts 12:5, the Church prayed for the Apostle Peter: Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. Prayer became the key to Peter’s release from jail. As a church, we are to continuously pray for Christians who are ready to give their lives for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
If possible, visit them. When my late wife Sharon went to the mission field, she would visit men in prisons to minister to them. They were given the Character of God studies, and many came to know the Lord. One prisoner became a pastor! Imagine that! Pray and ask God what he would have you do for those who are imprisoned.
We were not poor, but rich. Rich in this new evidence of the care of Him who was God, even of Ravensbrück.
