Independence Day

“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.”
Matthew 12:25

The United States of America, as an independent nation, has enjoyed its freedom. Every year on July 4, we are reminded of the high cost of that freedom. Thirteen colonies united in their cause against the tyrannical rule of King George III and high taxation. Although there were differences among the colonies, there was no division among them in the war against the British––a war that lasted about seven years.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence. It was written by godly men who recognized the Supreme Judge of the world––God. On September 3, 1783, a treaty was signed in Paris, whereby Britain agreed to recognize the sovereignty of the United States and formally end the war.

Since then, America has been a great influence in the world. We have grown to become the greatest nation on the face of the earth. America has been blessed by God. He has shed His grace upon our great nation. As Americans, we must continue to be united. Yet there are people in government and violent activists who would bring us back into bondage––Socialism, Communism and even Marxism. These philosophies, along with America’s moral decline, have deeply divided our country. If these philosophies succeed, we shall no longer be free.

As a divided nation, we will not be able to stand against our enemies. Will we be brought to desolation? It is time for the Church to shine––to be of greater influence. Pastor and author, David Jeremiah, wrote: “There is a moral and spiritual war for the souls of Americans. And this war must be waged by preaching the Gospel, prayer, and obedience to God’s Word.” Are you fully engaged in the fight?

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.
