Team Players

...and Timothy our brother, to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Colossians 1:1-2

In Acts 16:1, we find that Timothy had a Jewish mother and a Greek father. His mother Eunice and grandmother Lois trained Timothy in the Scriptures from a young child (2 Timothy 1:5). Paul saw Timothy’s character and chose him to be his co-worker in the Gospel. He looked at the quality of Timothy––a young man with a spiritual foundation.

If I chose a team to play baseball, I would to choose winners––the best. When God chooses His team, He does not choose the best––the most beautiful, the rich or the eloquent. He chooses those who make themselves available to do the will of God––those willing to be used in the Kingdom of God.

What is the will of God? Simply, the will of God is that we believe and fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ and become more like Him. His will is to be obedient to what He has written in His Word. That is the will of God. Listen to Jesus. He told the multitudes that doing His will constitutes relationship: “For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother” (Matthew 12:50). Amazing––amazing!

In Paul’s greeting, the believers were called saints the word means “consecrated, holy and set apart.” We are saints; set apart for the Master’s use. We are described as being “in Christ,” which speaks of our position, seated together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). Paul spoke of those who are mature––faithful brethren. They do the will of God from the heart because they made a solid commitment to walk in obedience to Christ.

Are you a team player? Are you faithfully committed to do the will of God with your brothers and sisters in Christ?

When your great players are team players, everybody else follows their lead. The best team doesn’t always win – it’s usually the team that gets along best.
