God’s Word Comes to Pass
And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple. But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless. So it was, as soon as the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house. Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, “Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.”
Luke 1:21-25
A multitude of people remained outside the Temple praying, without any knowledge of what was happening inside. As time went on, they began to marvel. The word marvel means “to wonder at.” They wondered at Zacharias tarrying so long.
When Zacharias came out, something was wrong. He had gone into the Temple speaking, and came out to them unable to speak. Speechless, he was only able to motion to them with his hands. They must have wondered, What in the world happened? In the end, the people came to the right conclusion––Zacharias had seen a vision.
Finally, Zacharias went home. Then, in time, God’s Word came to pass. Elizabeth became pregnant. In her heart she knew that God had answered her prayer for a child. Others may have looked down on her in the past for not being able to have a child, but no longer; God had taken away her reproach. God was indeed her joy! Can you imagine though, Elizabeth, old enough to be a grandmother, walking around pregnant? No wonder she kept herself hidden for five months!
Know this: God can do whatever He wants to do! God is the one who opened Elizabeth’s womb in His perfect timing.
Answers to prayer have to be on God’s schedule, not ours. He hears us pray, and He answers according to His will in His own time.
