Holy One, Son of God
Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Luke 1:34-35
Mary, as a virgin, asked a very normal question––how was she going to become pregnant? To her credit, there was no inner struggle of unbelief. She never doubted the possibility, just wondered how this would come about.
Mary was not like Zacharias who questioned the impossible. He did not believe the angel’s message. Instead, Zacharias thought himself and Elizabeth his wife to be too old! As a result, he suffered the humiliation of not being able to speak until after the birth of his son. It was only when he wrote down the name of his child on a writing tablet, John (Luke 1:63), that he was able to speak. Mary’s reaction to the angel’s message to her was very different.
The angel responded to Mary’s curiosity: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” Let the truth of this moment sink in. Mary would carry Jesus, the Son of God, within her womb.
There are many people who challenge the possibility of the Savior’s virgin birth. To do so questions the validity of the Gospel message. Without a sinless Savior, both human and divine, there is no salvation for mankind. Believe the impossible––with God, all things are possible.
Mary’s virginity protected a great deal more than her own moral character, reputation, and the legitimacy of Jesus’ birth. It protected the nature of the divine Son of God… Jesus had to have one human parent or He could not have been human, and thereby a partaker of our flesh. But He also had to have divine parentage or He could not have made a sinless and perfect sacrifice on our behalf.
