Be Holy, as God Is Holy
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:13-16
First, Peter encouraged persecuted Christians in his day and age (which also applies to us and the difficult days in which we live), to rest their faith firmly in Christ. They were not to be afraid of all the uncertainties in their future but find rest and security in the hope of eternal life.
Our faith rests on the Rock of our Salvation, Jesus Christ. When we put our faith and trust in Him, nothing can move us. We stand steadfast on the sure promises of God’s Word: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8). Some people have nothing to stand on––sad. Their hope withers like the grass and flowers.
Peter made a shift in his writing, from describing and explaining the nature of salvation, to teaching believers their obligations and responsibilities because they had received them. These obligations can be summarized in two key phrases, “gird your mind” and “be holy.”
Surely holiness is lacking in the Church today. I believe many Christians fail to understand what holiness even means. The Greek word for holy is hagios. The root meaning of the word holy means “to be set apart.” One Bible dictionary defines holiness as “the quality of absolute moral purity that belongs to God, and by His grace, shared with His people.” A life of holiness means living differently from a worldly view.
Living a holy life is not about rules and regulations. It is not about religion, but about having a personal love relationship with Jesus Christ. That is a big difference, my friends.
When a man or woman is born again by the Spirit of God they will give evidence of it in part by striving to live a holy life.
